McCain's abortion answer ended it. And I don't mean the debate, I mean the election.
Constant refrain of "pro-abortion," about such a personal decision. Then to ridicule the exception for the life of the mother - that's the end. And his answer on the Supreme Court and abortion? It was awful.

It was over before this debate, but that's the end.

61. After they're born, women get these pesky "personalities" and "self-determination needs"
The Unborn are a blank slate. Much, much more appealing than an actual kid or pregnant woman.

Fetuses are the ultimate 'victim' to these types, just floating out in space, not bothering anyone until some selfish woman comes out of nowhere to kill it.

It makes them feel like the ultimate hero to 'save' fetuses from their uteri.

and they were going to vote for palin anyway. The idiocy of his answer will make more independent men and women wonder "Why the hell should I listen to these kooks for five minutes?" Ridiculing the life and health exceptions was over the top.

And McCain started it off by lying about Obama's vote on this and the newborn resuscitation portions of proposed and existing laws. McCain like to lie. He's a liar.

20. His stance was dismissive. He wants women to die with pregnancy complications. And smiled about it
If you are a woman who intends to get pregnant in the next four years, McCain wants not only to take away your right to choose for the reasons you believe are valid, he wants to take away your right to end your pregnancy EVEN IF YOU ARE GOING TO OTHERWISE DIE.

And he was flippant about it. Go for it, PUMAs.

44. Yeah, I think McLame screwed himself with that abortion discussion tonight.
It isn't any shock that he's anti-choice. I think just about anyone who is awake and paying any attention on that issue has known for a long time that McLame does NOT support a woman's right to choose. He and Caribou Barbie think they have the right to determine the occupancy rate of any woman's uterus and they have made it abundantly clear.

What I think screwed McLame most was the fact that he refuses to admit that there ARE times when a pregnancy might need to be terminated. He staked out a position that is not only contrary to popular public opinion, but he did it in a way that was high handed and actively offensive.

We were watching the CNN coverage with the voter feedback going on in the bottom of the screen. Obama hit it out of the park when he talked about the need to work to make unchosen pregnancy less common. THAT makes sense to people and it is the ONE common ground that people are comfortable talking about. Men AND women supported those statements.

55. I agree -- the debate will help dispel the misconception that he's pro-choice
I think just about anyone who is awake and paying any attention on that issue has known for a long time that McLame does NOT support a woman's right to choose.

Not necessarily. According to from February, "Many Republican voters, however, seem to believe, incorrectly, that the current Republican front-runner, Arizona Sen. John McCain, supports abortion rights, too." I also recall reading (though I couldn't find a citation quickly) that, in the strongly pro-choice swing state of New Hampshire, something like 40% of the voters are mistaken about McCain's stance on reproductive rights.

We can hope that this debate will bring the point home to millions of voters who aren't politics junkies and who had the vague impression that the "maverick" had defied his party on this issue.

It painted McCain as an out of touch and ridiculous partisan who can't tell which way the wind is blowing. At the same time, Obama's answer was elegant, well thought out, and principled that any American could relate to. It's just a shame that Schieffer cut him off, but I suppose with McCain's constant interrupting and antics on the stage he was running out of time.
