Debunking "Move on for America"
I just want to consolidate some information that started at the "action alert" thread, hoping you might add more.

"Move on for America," run by Stephen Marks, is going to put out some "brutal, hard-hitting ads:" http://www.moveonforamerica.org/

The website indicates this has to do with two (racially-charged) items:

1. Giving Kerry a "Willie Horton"
2. Associating Kerry with Al Sharpton, portrayed as a dangerous hatemonger.

Both are OLD maneuvers that Stephen Marks used in 2000 against Gore, under the ironic name "Americans Against Hate" (I believe a different organization is using that name now).

The person Stephen Marks is trying to make into Kerry's very own Willie Horton is George Reissfelder. This man was *wrongly convicted.*
http://www.amnesty133.org/ai/actionteams/dp/g_reissfelder.html
He died in 1991 of a drug overdose.

Mark's hatred for Al Sharpton goes back at least to 2000, as well:

Americans Against Hate, a newly formed group run by G.O.P. consultant Stephen Marks, is up in four states with a spot linking Gore with the Rev. Al Sharpton. Sharpton, says the announcer, admires Hitler (flash to photo of the dictator) and defends rapists and cop killers (video of Willie Horton-style mug shots). The ad asks, "Mr. Gore...what kind of unholy alliance will you have with Al Sharpton?"
http://cnnstudentnews.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/time/2000/11/06/stuff.html

And this:
American Against Hate alleges that Sharpton, among other things, once praised Adolph Hitler as "a great man." The ad also shows video footage of Sharpton urging college students to kill police officers.

"We're trying to get these ads out between now and the election to spread the word that the hate in this country is not on the right but on the left," said Stephen Marks, a spokesman for the group. According to Marks, the group is mainly funded by a few big dollar contributors from Tennessee.

"Unlike Bill Clinton, who properly denounced Sister Souljah and other racists in 1992, Al Gore has gone in the other direction and embraced people like Al Sharpton," said Marks.

"It's mind-boggling to me that George W. Bush was properly criticized and had to back away from the Bob Jones , and nobody has taken Gore to task, neither the Bush campaign nor the Republican party," said Marks. "Can you imagine if George W. Bush...praised David Duke and said we should listen to what he has to say and respect him? All hell would break loose," he said.

It's possible Marks also worked for Pat Buchanan in 1996 -- not sure if it's the same guy.

This was just some cursory research. Please post what you find. Who else is in this group? Who's contributing to it? Looks like a cheap, low-level operation looking for some funding from Merrie Spaeth et al.

1. The Perfect Response:
Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 06:14 PM by Tandalayo_Scheisskop
We all have a right to competent representation before the bar of justice. Therefore, all this proves is that John Kerry has always stood for the rights of the individual against the power of the government.

On Edit and Reflection: The perfect response would be for Kerry to say:

"And to Steven Marks I say: Blow. Me. Till. I. Bleed". This would, of course, bring its own set of liabilities...

3. Kerry has about 250 W* put to death to comb through...
... including one he didn't. One of W* only pardons from death row was probably the worst serial killer in US history: Henry Lee Lucas.

7. Seems too silly even to bother with.
Releasing a man who was wrongly convicted?
Treating Al Sharpton with respect?

I didn't see the ads, but it looks to me like this guy has been itching for his fifteen minutes for awhile. And it looks to me like he'll be lucky to get fifteen seconds.

10. MoveOn needs to sue these crooks today!
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 03:14 AM by Democat
They are trying to get donations using the name "MoveOn" - they are trying to trick people into thinking they are the real MoveOn and, in doing so, they are confusing donors and potential viewers of their ads.

MoveOn should get a restraining order right now, before it's too late.

They can run their lying ads, but they cannot use someone else's trademark to confuse people.

Imagine if a liberal groups were to run ads claiming to be "National Rifle Association (NRA) of America" - that would never happen because the real NRA, backed by the Republican Party, would sue them so fast and so many times that they would spend all of their money fighting off the lawsuits.

MoveOn should file a lawsuit at once against these crooks!

11. That would get about as far as the "fair and balanced" Fox vs. Franken
But I agree in spirit regarding the malicious intent.

13. You are wrong - MoveOn is a trademark - you can't use "Fox News"
This is not like "fair and balanced" at all. This is a slam dunk case. You cannot use someone else's brand name.

If another news network started up and called themselves "Fox News for America" they would never get off the ground.

MoveOn can shut them down easily if they actually file a lawsuit.

Again, take the NRA for example. If someone tried to start the National Rife Association for America, they would be sued and stopped immediatly.

This is a clear trademark violation which can be easily won by MoveOn in any reasonable courtroom.

If MoveOn doesn't sue them they are weak and they are are allowing their name to be undermined!

16. Think these guys are just trying to distract MoveOn?
Perhaps, by occupying them by making them fight them off with lawyers during the heat of the campaign?

I don't thin it will work. All it will take is one C&D order. And these ads of this copycat group sound ridiculous. Horton? Sharpton? Come on! I say let 'em run the ads - they'll make Bush look bad.

14. All these ads will do is piss off Republicans and they will vote Kerry
-Edwards to retaliate. This is exactly what a large base of Republicans did in ’92 to help put Clinton over the top. There is a line in negative ads and if you cross it you will dilute your base. Election and poll history shows this EVERY time!

15. Stephen Marks is part of the Bush-Rove-GOP “Texas Mafia” Cartel
and donates to Bush PAC’s particularly Texans for Legal Reform. Here’s what I posted on another tread on this new moveon GOP clone.

===============
Thanks good work getting the Tax Filing!!

Texans For Legal Reform (TLR) is a Bush-GOP-Rove-“Texas Mafia” Entity. We know it well!

It was started back when Bush was Governor by Enron’s Key Lay and used as a big tool to water down the Texas legal system as to Corporate Liability and lawsuit exposure. It has all the big Bush “Texas Mafia” players in it.

Of interest Robert J. “Bob” Perry (Houston) Mr. $200,000 donor to O’Neill-SBVT, is TLR’s largest donor. Perry is also the largest donor to Bush’s “War Dog” Rep. House Majority Leader Tom “Most Corrupt Politician in America” DeLay (Houston).

Perry and DeLay are like Mutt and Jeff, if one is around the other is not far away. DeLay is currently under a massive criminal grand jury investigation, for all the fun stuff being fraud, bribery, conspiracy, money laundering, and criminal misuse of Public office!

Also the Feds accidentally found documents while investigation Enron, that could mean jail time for DeLay, Perry, and some of the Bush Texas Mafia boys!

This is why the Bush Texas Mafia and the GOP is pulling every duty trick in the book to get Bush elected. Some of Bush’s buddies are going to jail, and they need “Clinton style” Presidential pardons from Bush.

Also of interest is another large donor, to TLR being Harlan Crow(Dallas) who is the second largest donor to O’Neill’s SBVT fraud. Gee small world.

Over the years, I understand but have not personally verified, that TLR has shoved millions to Bush and his interests. I’ll check it out when I get back in the office Tuesday.

R.E.
