I think I may have just fucked up. |

Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 08:02 AM by ccharles000
Me and my mom are going to go vote in an hour and I made the mistake of bringing up abortion. I told her how john mocked womens health and she told me that women who have abortions are selfish and killers. So we argued and she went to the store. I hope I did not make her so mad as to not vote for Obama. I still have a hour to work on her. I don't even know why I told her seeing as we disagree on the issue.

1. The way I heard that (did not see it) it was more about lying |
|
than about abortion. Frame it that way. First McCain says there's "no litmus test" for whom he'd appoint to the Supreme Court, as long as the person was qualified. But then he said that somone who would support Roe V. Wade is NOT QUALIFIED. That makes no sense, and he lied. It is nothing but a litmus test.
Would your wife oppose an abortion for someone who was a victim of rape or incest? Or someone who was told, early in their pregnancy, that their child would be born with a horrible impairment that would cause physical and/or mental pain in life? If so, then you have nowhere to go with that one. But if she'd have sympathy for that person, tell her that McCain, and especially Palin, would outlaw ALL abortions, period, no matter what the cause.

3. If she brings it up, just remind her of the Palin view that even in cases of |
|
rape or incest...
OR -- if she feels the same way about that as Palin, just let it drop and get on to other McCain issues.

4. i would only tell her to vote for whoever she thinks will be best for the country... |
|
forget the arguments and points, etc....
let her conscience guide her...if it's all about abortion for her, so be it...
jobs, economy, war, education, corruption...why bother?

6. So your mom is in favor of harming the mother to save the baby? |
|
Maybe even if it kills the mother (ectopic pregnancy)?
Is that being "selfish" if she wants to save her own life?

I understand how your mother feels... I personally could never have an abortion, even if my life were at stake. I don't agree with her rationale as to how that applies to voting choice however. That said, your mom's vote isn't your responsibility, it's hers.
One of the many great things about this country is that people get to vote however they personally want to, even our parents, lol. Just tell your mom to vote for whoever she thinks that will make the best president, and that you love her no matter what. Then take her out for ice cream afterwards;)

13. An ectopic pregnancy cannot be brought to term. |
|
It is impossible for a woman to carry such a pregnancy. The fallopian tube will rupture and the fetus will be lost. The only question is whether or not the woman will survive the blood loss.
Just wanted to point out that the option of "having the baby anyway" isn't always possible.
And good luck with your mother. My advice would be to not talk Obama, but remind her of why you guys have decided NOT to vote for McCain. Have fun voting today!! It's your first presidential election, right? I'm so excited for you!

8. Just make sure YOU vote. |
|
If your Mom votes for Obama that's 2 votes for him. If she votes for McCain your vote cancels her vote out so it's all good. She'll do the right thing.

9. Abortion is a tough tough issue... |
|
I am torn on the issue since I do believe that life is pretty much life and there's no getting around it. That said, I'm also in favor of letting women choose how to manage their own lives. I believe it is down to individual conscience and not for states or govt to decide. Saying this, this is not an issue I am ever comfortable with... and you'll see a measure of contradiction on how even I stand on this issue. As for mother's that might vote against Obama on this issue I suggest you talk about how McCain has voted against women's equality, fair-pay etc time and time again. He is not for justice, fairness, equality. There are more issues than abortion - make sure she hears you on those ones. Cheers BK

11. My mother is prolife, I had to make it personal to get her to understand |
|
Ask her if she thinks a 11 year old girl who was raped by an uncle and became pregnant should be made to have the baby? That happened to someone I know, it devastated her, she is a grown woman now and she still has a hard time dealing with what happened to her.

16. McCain did mock health exceptions to late term abortion laws |
|
I did a double take because it was so insulting. He made it sound like exceptions for the health of the pregant woman were a loophole rather a necessity. That part of the abortion discussion, which started as a topic on Supreme Court appointments, was very illuminating as to McCain's views.
