USA TODAY: Clark closes in on Dean in poll
Clark closes in on Dean in poll; Bush still beats Democratic field
By Richard Benedetto and Susan Page, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — Democratic presidential contender Howard Dean, pounded by rivals in recent weeks for his positions and his temperament, has lost ground in the USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll, and retired general Wesley Clark has emerged as his chief rival.

Dean still tops the Democratic field in the national survey, at 24%, but the 21-point lead he held over Clark less than a month ago has narrowed to just 4 percentage points, within the poll's margin of error.

4. Look back to Dec. 5-7, since then Clark up 3, Dean down 1, lead 8
This poll has fluctuated considerably in just one month.

Perhaps the race is that fluid...early in the month Clark lost 7 points in this poll in less than 2 weeks.

5. Gallup is an outlier
Remember 2000. Gallup showed Bush walloping Gore by seven to eleven points right up to election eve when their margin mysteriously closed. They are trying to steer the race to the sure loser. That would be Wes "Let's start WWIII and while we're at it, let's look the other way while civilian contractors on our bases buy and sell twelve year old girls as sex slaves" Clark.

Google Wesley Clark + Dyncorp + sex

8. Don't 'feel for Dean'
This is what it is all about. At the end of the day, the better campaign (and presumably person) will win. If Dean can't sustain a lead and capitalize upon his early successes, then he deserves to lose.

9. What is the gender chasm between Clark and Dean?
The ARG poll showed that Dean trounces Clark with women 43-7. What was the USA Today's gender gap rating?

12. The voters are just starting to focus
the big surge wil come when folks start dropping out. The majority of Gephardt, Lieberman, and Edwards votes will go to Clark--just in time for the southern and western primaries.
