Alright, folks, I've been sitting on the sidelines for the past few days with this Joe The Plumber crap. Some people have let out their inner fucknut and keep spouting off about shaving your head, skinhead this and skinhead that, and other generalized bullshit.

I've had enough.

First, I'd like to say that just because a person shaves their head does not mean that they're part of some redneck cult. Such an idea is absurd. My dad shaves his head because he went bald. I'm sure there are people on here who do the same. Some people actually like it and more power to them. I shave my head for a myriad of reasons. It irks me to think that a community where we are supposed to be accepting of everyone's individuality is now starting to show markings of the very beast they so vehemently oppose. What the fuck is wrong with you to start pigeonholing people based on their appearance? Next thing you know, it'll be acceptable to announce that all queers have HIV or it's common to find blacks stealing because that's what those types do. And another thing: just because someone does shave their head doesn't mean they're affiliated with any sort of skinhead idealism, either.

Speaking of which, let's talk about those that do in fact identify themselves as skinheads. How many people on here actually know anyone involved in said subculture? I would assume few. Let me clue you in on a little known secret that seems to escape our culture's collective mind - most skinheads are non-racist. Re-read that last line. There are racist and/or apathetic factions but most skinheads are intolerant to racism and fascism. Truth is, you'll find skinheads and white power types fighting each other all the time in most major cities where both are found. Fact: skinheads were the first faction to appreciate Reggae outside of Jamaica. Fact: most skinheads have nothing to do with politics be it left wing or right wing. Fact: there are plenty of famous references to skinheads in modern culture that you are probably completely unaware of (like Elton John lyrics). There are even EXTREMELY famous people that were either associated with skinheads or were skinheads at one time. Don't believe me? Google it.

The truth is there are lots things we don't know about each other aside from political affiliation on this chat board. And sometimes that's even questionable. I'm not the type of person to ever tell anyone how to conduct themselves, on here or anywhere else. I also understand that politics create passion and tension. Emotions flare and temperatures start to rise quickly. It'd be nice though if some people would simply take a second to pause before they start to make blanket statements.

I worked at a outreach program for homeless kids, street freaks and drug addicts for about 6 years....

The skinheads I worked with in 1986 were part of a group that later kicked a young African man to death on the streets of Portland Oregon.

They weren't listening to Reggae when they did it.

Unfortunately to most people, white power and other types of skinheads are indiscernible. 6 years ago, white power broke my wrists with a three foot axe handle. They attacked a multi-racial girl and shattered her cheek bone. I came up from behind and put three of them in the hospital. Too bad I didn't go for the guy with the axe handle first, I suppose.

Anyhow, I'd never defend those assclowns. They're not even human. They attack when they know they can win - armed and in numbers. They are no different than any other racially motivated gang. But understand they are not representative of the subculture. In fact, if you read the history, the white power minority that claims skinhead basically tried to rape it and rewrite history to make it their own. I appreciate the fact there are kids still to this day who refuse to let them get away with their stupidity and keep them in the minority. It's not like the police are going to do anything about it.

and I had a really bumpy little skull, nothing that ever needed to be seen again ;).. but yep, shaved heads can mean a lot of things.. I think it might have more to do with what you know about the area that you live in.. If you have a larger number of skin head types in your area, probably you are going to associate that with people who are irrational.

EDIT: skin head types who embrace irrational thoughts and behaviors..just to make it clear. Not everyone who has a smooth pate is irrational, but all smooth pates are skin heads..

Thank you. I know an awful lot of anti-racist skinheads. The white power types might get all the press, being the squeakiest wheel and all, but they are not representative of the whole subculture.

And ye gods, not everyone who does the Picard thing is a skinhead. For some it's just a fashion statement or a practical thing of not wanting to deal with hair. Like my ex, who was going bald at a young age, said fuck it and shaved, and looked far better without hair.
