of being a citizen, lifelong voter, lifelong Democrat and believer in democracy and the progress of the human race, in the midst of this Corpo/fascist coup d'etat in the U.S. of A. It's rough--not as rough as it has been on the millions of victims of this coup, who are dead, or the thousands who have been tortured, or the millions who have been displaced or impoverished. But rough nevertheless, to be living through a period of such horrendous injustice perpetrated by my own government, or somebody's government, not really mine in any sense. Just the name: America.
You go up. You do down. You think, ah, democracy is still working here (2004). Then, boom, it ain't. Or back when millions marched against this horrendously unjust war, and nearly SIXTY PERCENT OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE OPPOSED IT (Feb 03, all polls). Surely our leaders will have to listen. Nope, they are deaf. Then '06, and Americans rally again and vote in the Democrats to end the war. 70% opposed to it now. And the Democratic Congress does the opposite--and ends up with a 10% approval rating, worse than Bush's. And you start thinking really dark thoughts, like this spying thing is no joke. They are spying on all the Democrats and blackmailing them. Or may they're all so fucking corrupt, both D and R, it's hopeless. Then the one guy left standing in the presidential race, who opposed the war, actually gets the nomination. Wow! Something's working right.
Up and down, up and down, on the roller-coaster of hope and despair. This statement from the Obama camp is heartening, in that it is REAL. It's where we all are. It may just be a supporter and campaign worker who is projecting onto Obama the hopes and dreams of restoring our democracy that he or she feels. I think there are many of those, who may end up being disappointed in their candidate, since nobody--and I mean nobody--who intends real reform of this government will be permitted into the White House. But still. It takes more than a leader to make a revolution. It takes an activated citizenry. In fact, that is the first requirement--an aroused, active, passionate citizenry, determined to take their country back. And, for all Obama's policy compromises, he does do that--he activates people!
And those people know what's what. That comes through loud and clear.
"This is kind of the last shot -- the entire govt has been derailed, no DoJ, everything is politicized."
I don't agree that this is "the last shot." I think that, as long as the "window of opportunity" remains open, at the state/local level, to toss these Diebold & brethren election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor,' we still have a shot at restoring democracy. They are the main culprit. They give the Corpo/fascists direct control of election results--and with guaranteed power, their operatives have felt confident in pulling all this other shit--voter purges, vote suppression, the financial 9/11. But I do agree that "the entire govt has been derailed." And I think even worse--the "government" is our "enemy." The government is actively working to impoverish, demoralize and disenfranchise its citizens. I agree with the tone and seriousness of the peril we are in, in these statements from the Obama camp.
And I am very glad to hear it from them. And I thank you for this post. I hadn't seen it before.
I also agree that this is a different Democratic Party, run by Dean and Obama. We are now a party, and a political force, that doesn't give up. No matter what happens. We WILL get our country back--no matter what kind of crap the Corpo/fascists may still pull. Because the People want it back. If Obama had done nothing but this--activated the people in this country whose eyes are open, and who know what's what--he would be a great leader, whether he wins or gets Diebolded. I don't think he will get Diebolded. I think the Corpo/fascists have decided to pull back a bit. They may shave his mandate significantly, and give him a difficult Congress--and they clearly meant to tie his hands, with this induced financial meltdown. We still have quite a struggle ahead of us, even with an Obama win on Nov. 4, believe me. But the tide has turned as to the people of this country. And that is the most important thing that has happened. The toughness, smarts and determination of the People--now so clearly on the rise--will be the decisive factor. WE will lead our leaders back to accountability. WE will restore democracy in this land, no matter how long or difficult the road may be. I sensed this with the Election Fraud/Election Reform movement that arose just after the 2004 election--right here at DU, as a matter of fact. It was an amazing thing to see and to be part of. The spirit of Obama's supporters has reconfirmed my faith in the American people, and this statement of our situation, from the Obama camp, says it all. They have no illusions. And they will never give up.
One other thing: The Corpo/fascist TV and other 'news' is DESIGNED to demoralize us. Boy, do I agree with that! Keep that in mind--always! Give in to the depression and demoralization that they INTEND TO inflict on you, and they win. Don't give in to it, and they don't win. Yeah, they and their Diebold cohorts can steal an election, but they cannot demoralize you, if you don't let them. Step one in NOT getting demoralized is to know what you are up against--fully realizing it, and making it conscious. We are up against a coup d'tat, and their whole thing is to convince you that democracy is working normally, and you've simply lost an election. And, once you understand that they are LYING, then you gain the emotional stamina with which to defeat them.
Once again, thanks for this post! It is very inspiring.
