Modesto Bee: Barack Obama for president
Barack Obama for president
last updated: October 17, 2008 02:26:38 AM

A litany of serious problems faces this country: the collapse of financial institutions, spiraling national debt, rising unemployment, a dysfunctional health care system, crumbling infrastructure, a failed energy policy and porous borders. And we're fighting two wars.

What we've been doing isn't working. America needs a president who can look to the future and inspire change. We believe Barack Obama is the candidate who can do that.

Economy: Only a month ago, John McCain was telling the American people that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong." That wasn't true then, and things are worse now.

Both candidates propose tax cuts. Obama's plan would cut taxes for a large majority of Americans, giving much-needed relief to the middle class. McCain is focused on making George W. Bush's tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans permanent -- a move he once opposed.

3. Actually, Central California (especially that part)...
...has flipped purple within the last 10 years. Condit, Cardoza, McNerney did get elected in a vacuum--people there will back a Democrat that "gets" local issues.

5. I think McNerney
was helped by Rethug redidstricting. They cut into a chunk of more liberal Contra Costa County thinking it wouldn't matter. It took two tries but McNerney ousted Pombo and weren't they all surprised!

I remember in 2006 when McNerney won his seat. I was in NYC and it must have been about 2am NY time when they called it for McNerney. I was dancing all around my son's apt. Even though Pombo wasn't my rep, I could smell his foul stench all the way from my house.
