Bringing the wood?

Kerry in today's New York Times responding to Dems saying he needs to fight back is quoted as saying ""If they think they've seen the wood - we're going to take the wood to them over the course of these next few months," he said. "And we'll do it nicely."

I'm from the South where we use all kinds of colorful and obtuse homilies but I'm not familiar with "take the wood to them". Is this a thinly veiled reference to corporal punishment.

I'd prefer we're going to kick them to the curb.

I remember Edwards mentioning it in an interview "Our opponents will bring the wood....and we'll run a positive campaign based on hope"

something like that.

one of the reasons i had a feeling kerry would pick edwards for vp was when i heard both use lines that the other were known to use .
