By LIZ SIDOTI Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — The presidential race tightened after the final debate, with John McCain gaining among whites and people earning less than $50,000, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll that shows McCain and Barack Obama essentially running even among likely voters in the election homestretch.

The poll, which found Obama at 44 percent and McCain at 43 percent, supports what some Republicans and Democrats privately have said in recent days: that the race narrowed after the third debate as GOP-leaning voters drifted home to their party and McCain's "Joe the plumber" analogy struck a chord.

2. I would say the race is pretty close, but maybe not that close.
And Obama certainly has an advantage.

3. This Poll, Ma'am, Has A Very Poor 'Likely Voter' Screen
ts over-all result is a ten point gap in favor of Sen. Obama; its 'registered voter' pool gives a five point gap for Sen. Obama. These are pretty well within the common range. Its 'likely voter' screen seems to throw out registered Democrats disproportionately, to put it mildly.

4. Listen folks. Now is the time where we will get about 30 polls a day. Here's a general rule:
If it looks like an outlier, than it probably is.

6. This "poll's" methodology blows -- check the fine print
If it helps get Obama people to the polls, then it's worth the minor coronary incident (you won't have one though if you read the poll notes)

7. Looking at the demographics of the poll,

44 percent of the likely voters consider themselves to be born again or evangelical Christians -- which seems high to me. Also, 41% say they go to church at least once a week, which also seems high.

On edit:

To my surprise, Gallup in 2007 pegged the percentage of born agains/Evangelicals at 41%. Wow. But the percentage of people who go to church at least once a week is only 30. So this sample seems especially fervent!

9. Among crack smoking GOP pollsters, the race is a dead heat!
And the invisible man is kicking the mad hatter's ass, too!
