Bizarre story about racists and the election |
|
My husband has been in Arkansas the past month training for a new job. He works with a bunch or redneck morons. The other day my husband mentioned that he was looking forward to Obama taking office so that we could finally start to turn this country around. Hubby's co-workers all started sputtering in righteous indignation. Following is the conversation, to the best of my recollection:
Co-worker: Obama ain't gonna win! Hubby: Why not? Co-worker: Because this country ain't gonna vote for no n---. Hubby: Ummm ... have you been following the news? He's well ahead in all the polls, you know. Co-worker: Well I'm saying there ain't no way he'll win. Husband: I take it you're not voting for Obama, then? Co-worker: Hell, no! I ain't voting for no n---! Husband: Are you voting for McCain, then? Co-worker: Nahhhhh. I don't see no point in votin.'
The other co-workers all agreed with the first guy: They had no plans to vote, either. Several of them aren't even registered to vote.
Ah, God bless complacency!

5. If somebody tells me they don't vote,... |
|
...I just tune them out. They're not relevent and have no place to complain. If they press me, I'll tell them so, too.

There are lots of non-voters.

The story is not so bizarre, I'm sad to say. That language was common in the fifties and sixties. I thought we got a good start back then and with integration of schools it would get better. Then when the human genome was decoded and it was found that genetically speaking we were all the same, and only a few genes from a monkey or plants for that matter,it would get better. Now many years later it is still with us, but an Obama win will be another step forward.Life here is so fragile that we need all the brain power we can muster just to survive. Hopefully even in the deep south progress will be made and we may live to see it.
