Michele Bachmann costs McCain another Republican endorsement

Former Republican governor Arne Carlson today (Oct. 23) endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.

At a Capitol press conference Carlson praised Obama’s vision for the future.

“I think we have in Barack Obama the possibilities of a truly great president,” said Carlson, who has on occasion endorsed Democrats.

Carlson cited the recent comments by 6th Congressional District Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Stillwater, as a significant factor in his decision to endorse Obama.

“I think it’s very fair to say right after those comments I called Walter Mondale,” said Carlson, referring to Bachmann’s appearance on “Hardball” last Friday where the congresswoman opined that Obama may have anti-American views.

Bachmann has said the show host set her up.

Carlson, who has tangled with the Minnesota Republican Party over issues, said he has been disappointed that Minnesota Republicans have not spoken out more against Bachmann’s comments.

2. Typical GOPer, blame the host
Oh, I was set up! Yeah, right!

Good for the former GOP governor that endorsed Obama. The more the better. :patriot:

6. Yes, he is
He's always been unhappy about the religious right's takeover of the republican party. If he ran again he would probably get elected.

8. I think the Minnesota GOP was ahead of the national party when it came to going nuts
Remember in 1990 they endorsed Jon Grunseth over Carlson because Carlson was "too liberal" and Grunseth was the pro-business, pro-family kind of Conservative they wing nuts just love?

And to prove just how much Grunseth fit the Republican mold of "pro-family" - he had to drop out of the race 9 days before the election after he was accused of cheating on his wives (he was only married to one at a time, but he cheated on each one in turn) and video surfaced of him skinny dipping with teenage girls.

The Republicans endorsed Carlson fast and we wound up with a seperate slip of paper to use as a ballot for the governor's race that had to be hand counted rather than scanned.

The wingnuts were left trying to figure out if they should blame the DFL or Carlson's wing of their party for the situation (because they would never blame Grunseth who faded into obscurity.)

9. Arne Carlson was a great governor
He and Dave Durenberger are the only two Repubs I have ever voted for.
