Ashley Todd, 20, of Texas, initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield and that the suspect became enraged and started beating her after seeing her GOP sticker on her car.

That deserves some compassion. But I think it's clear she made the whole thing up and it was an attempt to use racism to smear the Obama campaign. It was clear from the beginning. She wasn't attacked. The whole thing stunk to high heaven. And I'm one that tends to give benefit of the doubt. I don't think anyone who thought this story was highly suspect was demonstrating a lack of compassion. I saw no lack of compassion at all on DU. I saw outrage at at the awful, racist tactics this Young Republican was obviously attempting. without all the evidence that she was full of crap. I don't think people on DU as a matter of course just dismiss women's claims of being attacked. It wasn't just the photo. The whole thing didn't add up. There was absolutely nothing wrong with calling that out, and in fact, there would have been everything wrong with taking her word for it in the face of all that evidence that things didn't add up. Innocent people can end up getting arrested. In this particular case, campaigns can end up getting wrongly smeared. Votes can get lost. I'm sure the police would have come to the conclusion they did anyway, even without the posts on DU, but I still think DUers were right on the money. Just as the Pittsburgh police were. Things didn't add up. It was obvious. There was absolutely nothing wrong with bringing attention to that. Nothing.

There was serious evidence she was making it up. People had a right to be disgusted by that. I would never tell a person that they shouldn't hold back judgment, but my hackles raised when I was told that I was amiss for refusing to withhold mine. Yes, I took it personal. There was a lot at stake, here. We're lucky, damned lucky, that her attempt was so pathetic and obvious. She could have done serious, serious damage to this country with this if she'd had a brain and done a better, more convincing job of it, not to mention the damage she could have done to that community. I think that if she weren't outed for the liar she is, we would have been in serious trouble. As it is, she may very well have done serious damage if someone really is victimized in the future, whatever side of the political isle they're on, because now it's more likely no one will believe them.
