From the NY Times:

HONOLULU – Senator Barack Obama slowly walked up the steps of his campaign plane here on Friday evening, his suit coat slung over his shoulder, as he concluded his one-day visit home to Hawaii.

From touch-down on Thursday to take off on Friday, Mr. Obama spent nearly 22 hours on the ground in Honolulu visiting his ailing grandmother, Madelyn Dunham. He did not say how Mrs. Dunham was feeling and campaign aides did not disclose her condition, but he believes this could be his last time seeing her. http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/24/obama-leaves-hawaii-bidding-goodbye-to-his-ailing-grandmother/

CNN reports:

Since arriving in Hawaii Thursday evening, Obama has kept a low profile, appearing within cameras' range only once, when taking a walk alone through his grandmother's neighborhood near Waikiki Beach on the island of Oahu.

Wearing jeans, a black short sleeved shirt, sandals, and sunglasses, Obama was described as "somber and sad," according to a pool report.

As so many of us know, it is unbelievably difficult to say goodbye to a loved one, knowing you probably won't see them alive again. May our courageous candidate be surrounded with love and comfort in the days ahead.

Bless you, Senator Obama. We are so proud of you, so privileged that you are our candidate.

did get to smile in her eyes and that counts...

3. Yes you're right!
It's really sad when you say goodbye, knowing that you'll never see that person again. It happened to me too, with my mother, and I'll never really get over it.
Thanks for your sensitivity.

18. I was there when my parents left this world and it was the greatest
honor I could ever have, to see them off to the Summerland after they brought me into this world and loved me as much as I loved them. Losing them was like losing a limb and I know they felt the same way at the end. We were a three-headed person. I feel so much for him to have to leave her. There can be no other thing worse. We must appreciate him even more because of this. He has no real choice now that we have taken him for our leader. Poor thing. I could hug him.

5. What a terrible time to have to deal with such grief.
I'm sure he'd rather just stay at home with her for as long as she needs him.

But he has to put those feelings and worries to the side, and look to the country's needs now. He has to tap wells of optimism and hope within himself that he perhaps didn't even know he had.

You know, one of the things that makes me saddest for the Freep crowd is that they're missing this. This hugely, powerfully American drama. They're lost in their secret Muslim birth certificate world. Sad.

11. It's a damn shame that this is happening now...
...casting a sad shadow over events.

I hope Ms. Dunham can hang on a while longer.

Best wishes to her and the Obamas.

17. my husband still cries over his grandmother
and this whole thing has really bummed him out.

We both love Obama, and we know how hard it is.....we both miss our grandparents terribly.

We know exactly how he feels, as I lost mine just in January and he lost his 3 years ago.
If I could ever be just half the woman my grandmother was, I could call my life successful.

I sent a card to the Hawaii campaign headquarters, I hope they get it.
I addressed it to Mrs. Dunham...I put in the card that she (mrs. dunham) must be a very inspiring person, because her grandson has inspired us all.
and that we are looking forward to seeing him elected president.

Prayers and vibes to the Dunham clan.

24. Yes, pirhana, it must be hard to leave knowing that might be the last time he will see her
Barack and Joe their priorities in order-they value their families and make time for them. I really hope that his Toot lives to see her Grandson become President, I can't imagine the pride she would feel.

23. Screw that. I say she will make it.
I've posted in the past about how it would be extremely unfair for her not to witness HER contribution to history. I've decided to believe that she'll do just that. I'm an Aries so being stubborn is in my nature according to the astrology crowd.

I think Toots will see her grandson elected.

I've been sending energy to her, if her soul accepts it, for the strength to see him elected President.
