WASHINGTON - Utahns have topped the $10 million mark in supporting what will be by far the most expensive presidential race in U.S. history.

State residents have forked over more than 10 times the amount they did during the 2004 election.

But what may be more surprising is that in one of the most Republican states in the land, Democrat Barack Obama has raised more money than Republican John McCain.

McCain had a $200,000 advantage in Utah donations at the start of October, but a recent surge in fundraising has given Obama a tiny $8,000 lead.

Obama has outraised McCain in Utah by nearly 7-to-1 since the start of September.

9. You mean 1964.
Johnson's landslide over Goldwater was the last time Utah went for the Democrats.

11. The state house and senate had more democrats than republicans in the early 1970s
not sure the actual date it switched.

And of course we had a dem governor until 1985.

A friend of mine from the U of U poli sci dept says it was the abortion issue that made Utah dark red.

16. Clicked through and rated it up!
It *is* fucking amazing. I just watched the late local news, (on Tivo), and immediately came here to see if this story had been posted yet. Look at all that pretty blue in the map! :woohoo:

I am proud to be a part of that gigantic blue line of donations coming from Summit County.

(I *know* I saw an article posted somewhere awhile back showing that Utah actually has *way* more registered Indys than Dems or Repubs. Wouldn't it be FABULOUS if we went blue this year?) :bounce:
