What GOP ticket WOULD be beating us right now?
Hopefully in 10 days it will be "Which GOP ticket would have beaten us?", but I'm curious now.

Let's be historical revisionists for a second and consider Obama/Biden as it is. Which GOP combination would be beating them? And be honest--no "NO ONE CAUSE THEY'RE AWESOME!" answers.

My pick is Huckabee/Romney. Huck to placate the evangelicals and radiate that "folksiness" the Republicans put so much stock in, Romney to soothe the big-business wing, and their shaky coalition that is now tearing itself apart would be as solid as it ever was.

1. They'd keep it closer, but Obama would still be winning.

2. None. McCain/Palin is amazingly strong. Really.
Edited on Mon Oct-27-08 11:51 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
A joke is better than a bore.

I really don't think they could have done better.

The fact the Palin bounce went away doesn't change the fact that there wouldn't have been a Romney bounce at all.

Two months ago even the crazy people weren't for McCain, so he's picked up a key demographic

3. I think Romney/Huckabee (same reasons as you)
Even McCain/Romney would have been a LOT more competitive.

14. Agreed but I think Hagel and Lieberman would have been strong running mates
Hagel would largely take the Iraq issue off the table. Lieberman would have allowed them to claim they were interested in bipartisanship.

5. None...
Repukes are political poison right now, and McCain is the closest they can get to winning.

9. I think McCain/anyone else, really...
As bad as McCain is, the Palin pick completely was the point of no return from his slide. He's come back from behind before and I think if he had gone with someone like Romney or even Huckabee he'd be doing MUCH better right now.

25. the GOP base would have deserted them....
Lieberman may be strong on Israel but his record on social issues would have overshadowed that. The desertion of abortion nuts would far outweighed any addition of Jewish votes. To Gentile Democrats, Lieberman is nothing but a Jewish Zell Miller.

15. Paul/Williams would have been more interesting...
Obama/Biden would still beat them but that ticket would have a solid economic arguement and a campaign based on policy.

It would have been a good campaign, like the JFK/Goldwater campaign would have been.

I don't think any ticket would have actually won, certainly none of the guys who ran.

Several of the strongest Republicans chose not to waste their shot at the presidency on this cycle, Sanford comes to mind.

To be honest, I was relieved when McCain emerged the victor in the primaries. I think Mittens would have been a tougher battle.

28. NONE
The failures of the bush presidency have absolutely doomed ANY republican from winning.
Is it in the bag?, no, we need to keep the pressure on.
I DO feel that we've got a winner, and down ticket too...

Now we need to keep them going on our values, not to coast till the next election.

I for one, will be shouting to get the work done that the present clusterfuck created.

THAT is the next challenge for us, to get things done that will clean up 8 years of inept leadership

29. McCain would have done better with Lieberman
He could have just stayed on one message: experience, and positioned the ticket as a unity ticket. Yes the fundaloons would have stayed home, but I think it would have been stronger than what he has now.

32. None, but McCain/Huckabee would a lot tougher
We probably wouldn't have Florida or Virginia or North Carolina. We'd have to rely on the West (i.e. New Mexico, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, and even Alaska) to get a win. I think we would do it, but it would be alot harder.
