How Late to Stay Up?
I blocked the Kerry defeat out of my mind. How late was it that the election was truly, finally called?

How late are you staying up on Tuesday, 11/4?

3. Wow.
I knew Kerry wasn't going to win. 2000 kept me up.

I KNOW Obama is going to win, but I'll be up all night anyway.

10. Until McCain concedes. I made the mistake of going to sleep after Gore was assumed the winner.
I won't make that mistake again.

12. Good call... I will wait for concession...
Hopefully the east coast results will be knockouts and McCain will want to go to bed early.

13. McCain may just never concede
He's dishonorable in that way. It wouldn't surprise me at all if there's no concession speech, or if it's done in a way to take the air out of Obama's victory.

22. And I went to sleep after
the chimp was declard the winner that year (around 3AM). I then woke up to the news that there was no winner. Who's voice told me that? Lynn Samuels.

16. At least midnight. For excellent footage from election 2004,

It was excruciating. Exit polls and vote totals matched up at around 11 pm, with 51 Kerry to 48 Bush.

In the hours after that, the number diverged considerably. Statistically highly improbably, there was a SIX PERCENT SHIFT-- Kerry down three and Bush up three in the vote counts. Vote counts flipped to 51 Bush, 48 Kerry. And polling data was later ADJUSTED TO FIT the vote counts.

19. In 2004, I think it was pretty much over by 10 or 11pm est. This year will probably be the same.

21. Actually, the big flip from Kerry 51/Bush 48 to the opposite, happened after 11 pm
and was quite rapid. Exit polls and vote totals matched 51 Kerry / 48 Bush up to that point.

The vote count diverged after 11 pm.

The poll data was adjusted later to match that switch.

I hope we won't be prevented from having real time exit poll data this time. The networks may wish to hide that to "spare us confusion" this time. I sure hope not.

There is excellent TV footage from election night 2004 included in the documentary

Stealing America: Vote by Vote www.stealingamericathemovie.com

where you can review what I remember painfully observing after 11 pm on election night.
