What songs will your election night soundtrack consist of?
I like to set the mood of certain things with appropriate songs

Before the winner is announced:

"Eye of the Tiger" (Rocky soundtrack)
"Hoist the Colors" (Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack)
"Beelzeboss" (Tenacious D: Pick of Destiny soundtrack)

After Obama wins (I refuse to even consider the alternative):

Ewok music from Return of the Jedi
"America, Fuck Yea" (Team America soundtrack)
"One More Time" (Daft Punk)
"We're All Dudes" (Less Than Jake)
"School's Out" (Alice Cooper)

Age of Aquarius

When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius
Age of Aquarius
Aquarius! Aquarius!

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation
And the mind's true liberation
Aquarius! Aquarius!

Let the sun shine, Let the sun shine in
The sun shine in
Let the sun shine, Let the sun shine in
The sun shine in
Let the sun shine, Let the sun shine in

33. I didn't know that! Here are lyrics and link to audio! All Together Now!
http://kids.niehs.nih.gov/lyrics/happydays.htm

So long sad times
Go long bad times
We are rid of you at last

Howdy gay times
Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again

Altogether shout it now
There's no one
Who can doubt it now
So let's tell the world about it now
Happy days are here again

Your cares and troubles are gone
There'll be no more from now on
From now on ...

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So, Let's sing a song of cheer again

Happy times
Happy nights
Happy days
Are here again!

35. ah, what great memories, thanks for posting this
my family had me out working on campaigns and going to state conventions at age 6, in 1956. All were active democrats, ran for office, were delegates, knocked on more doors than any of us will. Grand women all. (I learned taking a kid to a meet and greet gets you to the front of the line so I suspect that might be why they took me!) In 1964 we decorated Aunt Max's house with Barry Goldwater stuff, full sized likeness, loud speakers reading one of his speeches, a great big red heart with "In your heart you know he's right" on it (Goldwater's slogan) spotlights...all on Halloween. Wow. I slipped into nostalgia there for a bit!

Ours is a signing family too. I can hear my three dear aunts singing "Happy Days Are Here Again" and having a great time.

We'll be doing it again this year!

47. yeah, we're into pranks in my family
Aunt Max was head of the dem party in her county...made it very funny...to us.

One of those "decorate Max's house on Halloween" tricks that went back 20 years.

And Aunt Willa made a Barry Goldwater that look just like him.

They are all gone now. I miss 'em.

I'm guessing that I'll need more than I needed four years ago.. :D

Meanwhile, I have a dry-erase Electoral Map (bought at a teacher's supply store) in my living room, and portraits of the four liberal Supreme Court justices.

Three TV's, one DVRing FOX for future hilarity, one on MSNBC looking for Olbermann to cry tears of joy, and the bedroom TV recording Jon and Steven on Comedy Central.

I've got this night planned to a "T". :D

The entire greatest hits album, maybe twice. Especially: I Want to Take You Higher and Dance to the Music.

Definitely the Ode to Joy chorus from Beethoven's 9th, and maybe Here Comes the Sun.

63. Feeling Good by the great Nina Simone...
Edited on Mon Oct-27-08 10:56 PM by ourbluenation
Birds flyin' high you know how I feel
Sun in the sky you know how I feel
Breeze driftin' on by you know how I feel
Its a new dawn, its a new day, its a new life for me
yeah, its a new dawn its a new day its a new life for me
AND I'M FEELING GOOD

Fish in the sea, you know how I feel
River runnin' free you know how I feel
Blossom on the tree you know how I feel
Its a new dawn, its a new day, its a new life for me
And I'm feelin good

Dragonfly out in the sun you know what i mean dont you know
Butterflies all havin' fun you know what I mean
Sleepin' peace when day is done that's what I mean
And this old world is a new world and a bold world for me

Stars when you shine you know how I feel
Scent of the pine you know how I feel
Oh freedom is mine
And I know how I feel

It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good

64. Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce - ON REPEAT

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Through_the_Fire_and_Flames

On a cold winter morning, in the time before the light,
In flames of death's eternal reign, we ride towards the fight.
When the darkness has fallen down, and the times are tough all right.
The sound of evil laughter falls around the world tonight.

Fighting hard, fighting on for the steel, through the wastelands evermore,
The scattered souls will feel the hell, bodies wasted on the shore.
On the blackest plains in Hell's domain, we watch them as they go,
Through fire and pain, and once again we know...

So now we'll fly ever free, we're free before the thunderstorm,
On towards the wilderness, our quest carries on.
Far beyond the sundown, far beyond the moonlight,
Deep inside our hearts and all our souls...

So far away we wait for the day,
For the light source so wasted and gone;
We feel the pain of a lifetime lost in a thousand days-
Through the fire and the flames we carry on!

As the red day is dawning, and the lightning cracks the sky,
They'll raise their hands to the heavens above with resentment in their eyes.
Running back through the midmorning light, there's a burning in my heart;
We're banished from a time in a fallen land, to a life beyond the stars.

In your darkest dreams see to believe, our destiny is time,
And endlessly we'll all be free tonight...!

And on the wings of a dream, so far beyond reality;
All alone in desperation, now the time has gone.
Lost inside you'll never find, lost within my own mind,
Day after day this misery must go on!

So far away we wait for the day,
For the light source so wasted and gone,
We feel the pain of a lifetime lost in a thousand days,
Through the fire and the flames we carry on!

Now here we stand with their blood on our hands,
We fought so hard now can we understand
I'll break the seal of this curse if I possibly can
For freedom of every man!

So far away we wait for the day,
For the light source so wasted and gone,
We feel the pain of a lifetime lost in a thousand days,
Through the fire and the flames we carry on!

84. Happy Days are Here Again...
Happy Days Are Here Again" is a song copyrighted in 1929 by Milton Ager (music) and Jack Yellen (lyrics). The song was recorded by Leo Reisman and His Orchestra, with Lou Levin, vocal (November 1929), and was used in the 1930 film Chasing Rainbows. Today, the song is probably best remembered as the campaign song for Franklin Delano Roosevelt's (FDR) successful 1932 Presidential campaign. Since FDR's use of the song, it has come to be recognized as the unofficial theme of the Democratic Party. The lyrics suggest optimism and buoyancy.

One of the most influential recordings of the song was Barbra Streisand's made 33 years after its first recording. While the song is traditionally sung at a brisk pace, her recording is notable for how slowly and expressively she sings it.

Barbra first recorded the song mid October 1962 at Columbia's NYC studio, some months before her first album sessions. This version, arranged and conducted by George Williams became Barbra's first commercial single in November 1962, with "When the Sun Comes Out" on the b-side<1>. Only 500 copies of this single were pressed for the New York market, and no copies were sent to radio stations. This 1962 version was re-released as a single in March 1965 as part of the "Hall of Fame" series with the 1962 recording of "My Coloring Book" <2>.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Days_Are_Here_Again

The slow Melencoly version by Streisand is my favorite because it basically tells us that happy days are indeed here again but there is little time to celebrate because the tasks ahead are so daunting. Literally resurecting this great country of ours...

86. I'm hosting an election watch party.
Wine, substantial munchies, and three kinds of PIE! And did I mention wine?

As for music, there will be ten of us, all in our fifties, so the music will reflect our generation. I'm burning a CD to play and dance to when the election is called. It'll start with "Monster," and proceed to Stevie Wonder's "As." It will probably include the Youngbloods' de rigeur song, and "Reach Out in the Darkness" by Friend and Lover. Certainly "Volunteers," "Ohio," "Here Comes the Sun," "Wonderful World" and "Good Day Sunshine." I'm still working it out, but I want the music to tell a progressive story -- in all senses of the word. We will dance in a Greek-style circle and swill champagne. We might do it in the street if Cincinnati isn't too cold. Thank you to those who suggested the blue candles! This will be the McGovern celebration we were denied when we were young, and the Gore celebration which was never allowed to reach completion.

Peace,

SE

I just spent 3 hours putting it together for the party....

Basically I was looking for some traditional, some patriotic, some Obama songs, some American folk, Some Rock....

Suffice to say that during the party after each state Obama wins I will put a song on and we'll take a drink and toast the state he won ie: "Here is to the good and wise people of Maryland"...

Along with, I plan some standard AMERICAN hors d”oeuvres, Red, White, and Blue Jello for the kids and some patriotic balloons and streamers.

I'm not a big flag waver but next tuesday I will be and sappiness will be part of the fun.

You never take the easy way

The wind is blowing straight into your face

You never ever close your eyes

For any trouble that may cross your way

There's no risk that you're not taking

Not a mountain that's too high

Spread your wings, You're gonna make it

To the best time of your life

Don't stop at the top

Touch the sky before you drop

You never make a compromise

Your will has got the power that won't break

You never say never to a challenge

That will come along the way

There's no risk that you're not taking

Not a mountain that's too high

Spread your wings, you're gonna make it

To the best time of your life

Don't stop at the top

Touch the sky before you drop

Appalachian Spring--Aaron Copeland
and for a complete change of pace...

US Blues--Grateful Dead

Red and white, blue suede shoes, I'm Uncle Sam, how do you do?
Gimme five, I'm still alive, ain't no luck, I learned to duck.
Check my pulse, it don't change. Stay seventy-two come shine or rain.
Wave the flag, pop the bag, rock the boat, skin the goat.
Wave that flag, wave it wide and high.
Summertime done, come and gone, my, oh, my.

I'm Uncle Sam, that's who I am; Been hidin' out in a rock and roll band.
Shake the hand that shook the hand of P.T. Barnum and Charlie Chan.
Shine your shoes, light your fuse. Can you use them ol' U.S. Blues?
I'll drink your health, share your wealth, run your life, steal your wife.
Wave that flag, wave it wide and high.
Summertime done, come and gone, my, oh, my.

Back to back chicken shack. Son of a gun, better change your act.
We're all confused, what's to lose?
You can call this song, the United States Blues.
Wave that flag, wave it wide and high.
Summertime done, come and gone, my, oh, my.

107. Democracy, by Leonard Cohen
"Democracy"

It's coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
It's coming from the feel
that this ain't exactly real,
or it's real, but it ain't exactly there.
From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
It's coming through a crack in the wall;
on a visionary flood of alcohol;
from the staggering account
of the Sermon on the Mount
which I don't pretend to understand at all.
It's coming from the silence
on the dock of the bay,
from the brave, the bold, the battered
heart of Chevrolet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the sorrow in the street,
the holy places where the races meet;
from the homicidal bitchin'
that goes down in every kitchen
to determine who will serve and who will eat.
From the wells of disappointment
where the women kneel to pray
for the grace of God in the desert here
and the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

It's coming to America first,
the cradle of the best and of the worst.
It's here they got the range
and the machinery for change
and it's here they got the spiritual thirst.
It's here the family's broken
and it's here the lonely say
that the heart has got to open
in a fundamental way:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the women and the men.
O baby, we'll be making love again.
We'll be going down so deep
the river's going to weep,
and the mountain's going to shout Amen!
It's coming like the tidal flood
beneath the lunar sway,
imperial, mysterious,
in amorous array:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

I'm sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can't stand the scene.
And I'm neither left or right
I'm just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
But I'm stubborn as those garbage bags
that Time cannot decay,
I'm junk but I'm still holding up
this little wild bouquet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

That song gets me every time, and I don't know a better song about hope and renewal than that.

Look all around, there's nothing but blue skies!

Look straight ahead, THERE'S NOTHING BUT BLUE SKIES!!

124. "Superstitious" (Stevie Wonder), because
I kept hearing this played after Palin rallies (oh, the irony) and I don't think Stevie would approve given his endorsement of Barack.

135. I'll happily re-play D:Ream's "Things can only get better".
You might depise Tony Blair now but that's what he used in 1997... after kicking out an even more miserable bunch of Tories.

Mark.

140. Songs
Pink Floyd - "A Great Day for Freedom"
On the day the wall came down
They threw the locks onto the ground
And with glasses high we raised a cry for freedom had arrived

On the day the wall came down
The ship of fools had finally run aground
Promises lit up the night like paper doves in flight

Pink Floyd - "Coming Back to Life"

Lost in thought and lost in time
While the seeds of live and the seeds of change were planted

Outside the rain fell dark and slow
While I pondered on this dangerous but
I took a heavenly ride through one silence
I knew the moment had arrived
For killing the past and coming back to life

I took a heavenly ride trough our silence
I knew the waiting had begin
And headed straight... into the shining sun
