3. Lots of white-flight from Cleveland |
|
Parma has been sued for fair housing violations. Repeatedly.
Those suburbs boomed after Cleveland had court-ordered school desegregation. The Polish, Ukrainian, German, and Slovaks are heavily represented, and I'm sorry to say, not very welcoming to minorities that don't look not them.
Changing slowly as the oldsters are dying off, but twenty years ago the racism was out in the open.

4. That's about the size of it. Ethnic white West Siders |
|
who back in the day were often racist as all hell, and it's only slowly starting to go away, maybe.
They are the Dennis Kucinich constituency, and in his earlier days, he played into their prejudices. Not many will talk about that, but it's true. After all, he was a white ethnic guy too.
Cleveland's always had a pretty serious divide between the heavily white Eastern European ethnic West Side and the more heavily African American East Side (formerly Stephanie Tubbs Jones' district). Doesn't mean everyone fits the stereotype (I'm a white East Sider who grew up in way-east-and-extremely-white rural Lake County myself), but it's more or less the pattern.

5. Lots of people her don't realize Dennis was a political opportunist |
|
He would change the message depending on the audience. I never, ever trusted the guy.
Knew Gary fairly well, years ago, through mutual friends. Ugh.
The inner rung suburbs were probably some of the most racist areas of this country (think Garfield Heights, Bedford, etc.) before they were abandoned by white flight, that's for sure. They brought that insularity with them.
Linndale was always a great place for getting pulled over for DWB.
Northern Medina County, here. Can throw a rock into Cuyahoga County from my front yard.
