Just monitoring Josh Marshall on Barnes interview... |
|
... and this is the latest:
(September 07, 2004 -- 09:24 PM EDT // link // print)
CBS has now gone live with its online promo for the Ben Barnes interview that is running tomorrow evening. But, as I noted earlier, that's not what the headline will be after the segment runs.
The big news won't be how Bush got into the Guard but how he blew off his duties once he got there. Again, new documents -- stuff that is clear and straightforward and apparently puts beyond any debate or doubt that the now-President blew off the duties that he said, as recently as this year, that he fulfilled.
------------------------------- Yessir, that's the ticket. I might even forgive CBS its prior lapses if it would only say, finally and definitely, that Bush lied, as we all know he has.

7. Good! Let 'em complain... |
|
Seems to me the lesson of the Swill Boats is once it's out there, all the refutations in the world won't kill it...and in this case, unlike those who countered the Swill, they won't have anything honest to refute this story with. I think they might be more likely to ignore the story as long as they can.

6. Daddy's thank you notes? |
|
GHW Bush was famous for always, always writing thank you notes. Does Ben Barnes have one from him about this? GHW Bush called Barnes a liar and said it never happened. Can't wait to watch.

8. Unless Kerry folks can connect this with today |
|
this won't make much difference to people.
To connect this to today we have to show that Bush is still a quivering coward today too. The underwater survival training prior to landing on the carrier (where did I read that) would be a good issue. Bush is a coward--afraid to confront his enemies that's why he ducked out of his guard service.
He was afraid his unit would be called to Nam. Now there is an emotional issue.
BTW:
The swift boat Liars issue is different because they are playing on
#1 The emotions of those who don't want to admit that giving so much to Vietnam was a waste of their considerable effort.
&
#2 That Kerry was just using this issue to be elected president some day. It's the same argument they make against Hillary Clinton all the time. If she sneezes there is some right wing wacko saying it's a set up so that she can become president some day.

9. Bush might be cowardly... |
|
... but he wasn't afraid that his unit would be called up for overseas duty.
By the time his lapses occurred, the plane the unit was flying was obsolete in the active-duty Air Force (I think the F-102A was last used in Viet Nam in April, 1968, before he joined), and was being used only for air defense within US borders by ANG units. In fact, his unit had been designated as a training unit for other ANG units who were destined to acquire the F-102A. At most, Bush might have been required to fly a few alerts, but his primary mission, had he continued to fly (which he didn't do), would have been to train other ANG pilots on the aircraft.
Cheers.
