1. The America you speak of died on November 22, 1963. |

We do, however, have a decent opportunity to chart a new path to a promising future. But I won't belive it until I hear Obama declared the winner on Tuesday night.

without economic freedom. This is what the war in 1776 was fought for, and every war since then to some degree or other has been either for that freedom, or to maintain a lack of that freedom as the case may be.
Even if we stood in unison, declared and obtained our freedom, if we didn't guard it religiously we would soon loose it again. It has happened several times in Americas history.
As long as private bankers control the money supply we will never be free.

3. No. At best, we might steer back toward "New America"'s general direction. |

After eight years of full-blown "too busy stealing to govern" Republicans at the helm, this Ship-of-State is adrift, its sails are tattered, and Dubya traded the rudder to the Saudis for pretzels.
We're taking on water at every level, every plank in the hull is rotten, the "pillars of industry" abandoned ship and pointed the lifeboats toward the Caymans years ago, and the coordinates of that legendary "Real America" are long out of date.
We can turn around and head for its last known position, but it's gonna take a lot of luck, and a very TALL president standing on a chair with a pair of binoculars to ever catch sight of it again, knowhutImean?

and i know what you mean. It was after 2000 that I really started to realize how far our country was from what it's supposed to be. It was really depressing. If Obama wins, I think we are taking a GIANT step towards that ideal, though.

6. That certainly won't happen overnight. |

In fact, that America never did and probably never will exist, because everybody is simply not a nice guy. There has been so much damage done in the last eight years, to say nothing of damage done during the Reagan years as well, that it will take a lot of fixing.
I do believe it can be fixed, but I think it would also be realistic to accept the fact that America is not the superpower it was, and might not be for a long while again. If you live overseas, you have a much better idea of the anti-American attitude held by the rest of the world. If we end up with President Obama, that will be the beginning of healing that rift, but it's only in movies where everything is okay after a change like that.
I think that hoping for a better America is an excellent thing. Working for it is even better.
