Will SC ever go the way of NC.
Now that North Carolina is a swing state and may go blue. Do you think South Carolina will ever catch up? I have always thought of SC as NCs scrotum(just kidding) but I think it will come along.

1. The werid thing is that Georgia is now a surprise toss-up, along with NC.
So what's wrong with South Carolina?

12. We're trying - I promise

We are fighting an awful lot of ignorance and racism in this state.

The largest employer in the state IS the state - so most people are working for the government, yet don't seem to put it together that if you don't like what the current administration (the governor, state legislature) are doing to our jobs (cutting budgets etc) then maybe you ought to vote for the other guys.

I hear bitching and moaning all the time about how the cost of living increases never keep up with the actual cost of living, but vote the republicans out? Oh my NO!!

I just don't understand why so many of my fellow South Carolinians insist on voting against their own best interests.

I have *converted* one or two voters this time, maybe the new Obama administration will help, but the education comes hard to some of these people. Especially the ones that like their ignorant state of being.

Please don't give up on my state just yet. There were more Obama yard signs that McCain signs in my neighborhood until the other night, when somehow, all the Obama yard signs disappeared. It was the strangest thing - the McCain signs are still there. It looks like no one is supporting Obama. The headquarters is now out of signs.

I'm making my own sign today to replace mine. I hope others will do the same.

3. SC votes on touchscreens. Their state constitution specifies
that their vote count be public and transparent, so their elections are probably all illegal right now.

4. SC as NC's scrotum? I take offense, sir.
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 02:54 AM by Skip Intro

Actually, that was uncalled for, but I do think SC, my home state where I still reside (Charelston area - not exactly red) will go blue within ten years, depending on how badly the repukes savage president Obama.

I hold a faint hope that this year may surpise many, as far as SC goes.

I'd love to see Obama carry this state and I'd love to see Lyndsey Graham pack his bags. I think I will see Linda Ketner take down a long-term repuke in the first district, and pick up a seat in the House for the Dems.

And I hope NC goes blue, I really really do. That is the surprise of the evening, or the first surprise of the evening, on Tues, is my guess.

As far as NC goes, tho, I really want to see Kay Hagan win big. After that "godless" ad from dole - I'd really like to see that kinda crap rejected by the voters, rather than see it vindicated.

6. About the same time Alabama goes blue-- in 30 years after most baby boomers are gone.
Many folks in that generation and older down here will never forgive the Democratic party for desegregation. GenX and younger seem to be better, but there are of course racist nuts in every generation and locality.

7. SC will not be a blow out... several other Southern states will shockingly surprise as well
if you get 95-100% African American turnout... The margin will be 5% or less. In a few Obama may eke out a win.

The organization in the state has been pathetic. The Dem candidate against Graham is a joke. Linda Ketner, an out lesbian, may upset the white male incumbent in Cong. Dist. #1. She financed her campaign out of her own money, and the DNCC is just now getting around to helping her. That she is even close to doing this should tell everyone something. If she does win, 50% of the House delegates will be Dems. There was a huge turnout for Obama in the primaries, and the primary here helped him tremendously. If there had been a decent ground game, the state might not go blue but it wouldn't be as red as some people think. As it is, it won't be that red. If the only thing people hear is Rethugs, they will never change. Don't assume that the state can't or won't change. Obama is running with the idea that if people know him and his policies, they will vote for him. The same thing goes for any candidate. The SC Dem party needs to start really moving!!

Edit: The post about slavery is why it will be harder to change. Yes, there are a lot of bigoted yahoos here. Stereotyping the whole state just writes it off all the time and it shouldn't be. BTW, that post is offensive to me and I think to other SC DUers.

16. Absolutely! The SC Democratic Party has been pathetic.
I believe Obama could have won SC if it had not been for the SC Democratic Party trying to sabotage the Obama volunteers from DAY ONE.

10. The Reason The Politics Of GA, FL, And NC Are Different Than The Rest Of The South Is Simple
Northern migration...

17. I think that's overly simplistic
Yes, Northern migration is part of it, but it also has to do with different economies, different histories (NC has been different from SC for A LONG time), immigration.

Northern migration is just one factor.

20. Wrong. That's not the reason.
If that were true, you wouldn't have someone like Chuck Todd talking about the "Bradley Effect" being more prevalent in the North because the South has dealt more openly with race in the last 40 years than the North has.

I'm very happy to have Northerners join us in the South, and I'm glad we lead the way in these areas.

11. Not likely
SC is much more rural than NC and that makes a large difference. I also think that there are fewer northerners who have moved in as well.

21. Most northerners I've met in SC are from Ohio.
Maybe it's coincidence, but in my years here I've been very surprised that every time I ask a newcomer where they moved from, it's always Ohio! So that is, in my opinion, what is happening to slow the process toward open minds. Those who moved from Pennsylvania have had a positive effect on SC. I'd imagine NC had many newcomers from multiple northern states, so that gives them an edge. What I still can't figure is Georgia, of all places! Who'd have thought it possible? They have had an ongoing reputation all my life of being backwoods Deliverance types. Maybe the number of newcomers to the Atlanta area, and probably Savannah, have brought enlightenment.

18. SC lacks an urban metro that draws in new people
North Carolina has Charlotte and the Triangle. Georgia has Atlanta.

South Carolina doesn't have anything comparable, aside from some of the southern Charlotte burbs.

19. Not true at all.
I don't know where you get your "facts" but you apparently have no idea about the growth of the Greenville/Spartanburg area, the Charleston area, and (to a lesser degree) Columbia.

Your wisdom would be news to those of us who are involved in urban planning. Perhaps you'd care to share your source? Love to see it....

I live in a district that has been Dem for awhile. My brother lives in Columbia and says there is a lot of support for Obama there and my family is from Charleston and they say there is a lot of support there for Obama also.
