‘Hussein’ Chant at Palin Rally
By Julie Bosman

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – “John McCain! Not Hussein!”

So goes the latest popular chant on the campaign trail with Gov. Sarah Palin, demonstrated at a morning rally in central Florida.

Ms. Palin was midway through her stump speech when a group of supporters began shouting it in unison, drowned out a few seconds later as Ms. Palin talked over them.

A similar chant, “Vote McCain, not Hussein,” was heard at a campaign event for Ms. Palin in Williamsport, Pa., earlier this week.

Senator Barack Obama’s middle name is Hussein, a fact that some of his opponents say proves that he is a Muslim. Mr. Obama is, in fact, a Christian.

After the rally in Florida ended, two of the people leading the chant explained why they did so.

“Because it rhymes,” said Shirley Mitten, 64, a volunteer at a pregnancy center and a resident of Brooksville, Fla.

She said she does not know if Mr. Obama is a Muslim. “He says he’s not, but we have no way of knowing,” Ms. Mitten said.

Her husband, John A. Mitten, 64, took credit for starting the chant. “I was trying to get it going!” he said. “I just do not want Obama to be elected.”

Mr. Mitten said he could not trust Mr. Obama because of his past association with William Ayers, the 1960’s radical, and because of his relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. He also pointed out that Mr. Obama’s father was a Muslim.

The middle name Hussein, he said, added to the suspicion. “I guess Obama was named after Saddam Hussein,” he said.

Sis: ACK! What a bunch of nimrods! I can't even wrap my mind around this.

8. Sadly, it goes both ways.
Check out the latest love affair for the freepers and tell me that stupidity isn't an affliction for some people of every race.

13. I call it about even, myself.
The idiot revers racism crowd and the Clarence Thomas crowd both work against true equality and social justice in this country. Both crowds are usually even working against their own self interests which makes it all the sadder.

It drives me up the wall. You can't fix stupid, and you can work on your ignorance...but willful ignorance is just despicable.

It is a public disgrace that such persons are allowed out of doors without attendants to keep them from wandering into traffic....

or willfully ignorant.

14. From my perspective your honour,
they SHOULD be encouraged to wander outside without attendants. The downside of course would be increases in auto insurance rates for the general public.

5. Those ignorant fools have never heard of the late King Hussein of Jordan?
He was a strong ally of the U.S, negotiated peace with Israel and even spoke at Yitzhak Rabin's funeral.

9. Not only that, but I suspect the name 'Hussein' is kind of like
'Smith' here. It's very common, but that doesn't stop the ignorant.

And I loved King Hussein, as I do his son. They will be good, valuable friends in the next four+ years.

16. My father was a huge admirer of King Hussein because of his efforts to bring peace to the
Middle East.

My dad was part of an international medical mission to Jordan during the Black September uprising there in 1970. When it was over, Dad was personally decorated by King Hussein, and together they passed some words in Arabic, which my Dad had picked up in Libya. For the rest of King Hussein's life, my Dad always spoke of him with awe and admiration.

"Hussein" means 'handsome'. And King Hussein was, in my opinion.

7. Or were they trying to insist -- "John McCain is not insane" ?
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 11:52 AM by Overseas
Just trying to insist that in spite of his forgetting things and flip flopping so wildly on his policy positions and wanting to tax medical benefits as income while extending Bush tax cuts for the extra-rich--

John McCain is not Insane

??

17. I've come to the conclusion that there's something seriously wrong . . .
with anyone voting for McCain/Palin . . . either they're completely uninformed, ill-informed, and/or misinformed . . . or they're extreme right wing fanatics . . . or they're dominionist Christians . . . or they're racists . . . or they're just plain stupid as a bag of rocks . . . or whatever . . .

if that's how they're voting, there's something very seriously seriously wrong upstairs . . .

(jmho. of course) . . .

24. It's good. It's good they're repeating it, getting used to saying it. Good for them.
Barack Hussein Obama is going to be their President for A LONG TIME. So they may as well go ahead and learn how to say his full name, complete with title, on the eve of his election.

President Barack Hussein Obama. It's got a nice ring to it, I think.
