McCain signs disappearing -- on their own
I live in a 55 and over complex -- a gated community (not one of those gated communities -- mobile homes). We have about 1900 homes.

A few weeks ago there were no McCain signs. Then, one day, a bunch went up all at the same time. So, I figured there was either some kind of GOP meeting, or someone went door to door handing them out.

HoweI noticed over the past few days that about 30 percent of the signs were no longer there. Now, since we're a gated community with 55-and-over folks, a pretty tight-knit community, it's pretty certain they're not being stolen or vandalized. All I can assume is that some people were pressured, or felt pressured, into taking the signs by people they socialize with, and now have buyer's remorse.

The guy down the street still has his proudly displayed, but he also has a "Boycott France" sticker on his 10-year-old Cadillac. He's a total whack job.

1. I saw one in a pile of trash leaving Medina last week.
I laughed most of the way home.

2. It wasn't considered a pile if "trash"
until the McCain sign was put there.

4. Our house was tense for awhile
Our landlord is a merchant marine. We rent the house and he stays in a garage apartment during the interludes when he's not at sea. At one point he put up a McPalin sign and we collectively groaned. About two weeks later, he took it back down again. We never asked him why, he's very conservative and we don't socialize much, but we wondered if one of his veteran friends informed him of McCain's actual record vis a vis veterans.

He's back at sea and we finally got our Obama sign and put it in the front window. :)

5. It's weird; I've seen it too
I was surprised when some disappeared because other signs in the same yards stayed (Coleman for Senate, local races).

7. I am not seeing any clear trend here
There are really only 2 concentrations of McCain signs I have seen in my area. One had about 6 on one street, almost every house. I think that one is down to 3 houses with them now, but I don't know why.

The other one confounded me. There was a very odd little side street that popped up a plethora of Obama signs during the primaries. Its not somewhere anyone would go except by accident, being very hilly, out of the way, and convoluted to boot. Up untill about two weeks ago, there were 8 obama signs up on that street. One McCain/Obama split household on the street. The Signs are side by side, and the Pickup has several McCain stickers, while the station wagon has several Obama Stickers. But when I drove through the neighborhood again this last week, a few Obama signs were gone, and the McCain signs in other yards had reached numerical parity.

Anyway, I did an informal survey as I drove around this last week for work. 78 Obama signs, 22 McCain. (11 of them on just those two streets) It helps keep me from getting too bored.I don't know what I will do after the election when the signs go away.

8. There's a house in the town over from mine
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 01:58 PM by brentspeak
with a fluorescent orange sign reading: "You can steal my McCain sign, but it won't prevent McCain from being elected. Vote McCain!"

There's a bunch of other McCain signs on other houses adjacent to his; none of them have been lifted, though. If there's anyone actually stealing this guy's McCain signs , it's likely his McCain-loving neighbors.

10. I have a similar story...
One of my good friends is a navy vet who put out a McCain sign in his front yard. After about a week of being up it was stolen. He put up two more signs the next day. I drove by his house a week or so after the new signs went up and saw that they were gone too. I called him up and asked him if they were stolen again and he said "No, Palin is an idiot, I'm voting for Obama."
