Will Obama use his middle name when taking the oath of office?

(Knock on wood!)

Didn't know if it was protocol to use your full name when taking the Oath of Office... looking at youtube, it appears that Clinton, Kennedy, and Bush 41 did, but Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan didn't.

Oh man, after all the Hussein bullshit from the right, it would be so sweet to see him use it as he's sworn into office. Now that would be some serious schadenfreude.

1. It would be a nice middle-finger to the Right if he did.

12. No, do it because every president does it. Omitting it would be a horrible signal
that an Arab-sounding name is something to be ashamed of. I guarantee you he will use his full name, as well he should.

13. I kind of hope he does, but my guess is he won't...

Since Reagan and Carter didn't, he probably won't either. If everyone else did, I'm sure he would.

16. Interesting! I always thought that Carter swore in as "James Earl" and Reagan as "Ronald Wilson."
Were you able to watch footage of those two Inaugurations?

And if so, what did the Chief Justice say to them beforehand, meaning did he say "I, Jimmy Carter" or "I, James Earl Carter" for Carter to repeat after him?

If you are right about Carter and Reagan, that clearly busted the strong old precedent, and I'd guess Obama therefore WON'T say Hussein.

18. I did watch them and...

They were prompted with exactly what they said: Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter. Now, I don't know which Reagan one I saw, 1980 or 1984. He might've been sworn in as RWR in 80 and then just shortened it in 84.

He was kind of making a joke about the "concern" about his being different from past presidents when he said it, I believe.

Doesn't matter to me either way, just that he is the one sworn in. Sweet.

29. I don't see why not
'Hussein' means 'handsome' in Hasidic. As Colin Powell pointed out, whether he follows Islam or Christianity really shouldn't matter.

were wondering what we'd all talk about after the election.

I have no strong feeling one way or t'other. Just so long as he's in the Oval Office on 1/20/2009. :bounce:

32. Why wouldn't he? It's his name.
It was his father's name. And honestly, "Hussein" is about as common a name in some parts of the world as "Christopher" is here.
