The Redskins test and the Lakers test.
According to lore, if the Redskins lose a certain game, the incumbent or the incumbent party will lose the White House. They lost that certain game.

Also if the Lakers lose a certain game (sorry I'm not totally clear on the details, can anyone fill in?) the GOP will lose the White House. The Lakers lost that game.

Now, the Redskins test, if I'm remembering correctly, did NOT work in 2004--they lost and so Bush should have lost. But here's to it working this year.

1. From Michael Wilbon's column about the Redskins:
When the Redskins win their final home game before the presidential election, the incumbent party stays in office. When the Redskins lose their final home game before the election the incumbent party loses, except in 2004. Pretty simple, right? Steve Hirdt of the Elias Sports Bureau discovered it's happened precisely that way 16 of 17 times since 1940. Anything close to that exact is more than a trend and is certainly politically unbiased.

We can presume that Steelers in a romp means Obama in a landslide. You don't want to argue with numbers that overwhelming, do you? "Congratulations, Barack," Leftwich said, smiling and revealing his own preference.

10. I'm a big Leftwich fan. I remember his linemen carrying him between plays at Marshall.
Check out the whole Wilbon column today. It's about Leftwich, who is from DC.

3. Technically, Bush DID lose in 2004 n/t

On edit: The result was disputed due to an official's call at the end of the game, in much the same manner as Ohio was disputed.

The similarity is striking.

9. Kornheiser is openly for Obama. I think Turico - sp?- is too.
Sportstalk radio is very pro-McCain. I had to stop listening to it during the primaries.

12. Kornheiser is an out Dem. So is wilbon. Don't know about Turico
He once on a golf telecast proclaimed that he would never refer to golfers as "warriors" and thereby compare them to actual soldiers whose lives are on the line. That's pretty radical leftist for a sportscaster.

Yes, sports talk is fascist.

13. I'm a member of a couple NFL forums...
after the Redskins loss last night, Steelers win, I posted that all McCain voters should just stay home today. The Redskins loss assured an Obama win. Received many ayes to that.

The 'lore' goes, if the Redskins win their last home game, prior to the election, the incumbent party wins, if not, the challenging party wins. It has been very accurate.

You said that it did not work in 2004 because Bush won. Are you sure he won? If so, that was the only year that it did not work. Yeah, I know, Bush occupies the White House but...

Steelers and Phillies were doing their best to ensure an Obama win in Pennsylvania. When Virginia and Pennsylvania are declared for Obama pop the corks.

This was fun, getting bored with 'what ifs' and negativism.
