Report: Reid to strip Lieberman of committee chairs today
A source with knowledge of the situation says that Reid will likely tell Lieberman that he is being stripped of his committee chairs -- a retributive move for the former vice presidential nominee's anti-Obama, anti-Democrat advocacy on behalf of John McCain.

A second source on the Hill could not definitively confirm that this would happen. But he said that leadership was far from the position it held back in February, when it was assumed that Lieberman's committee chairmanships would be safe.

There are still various outstanding issues that have the potential to prominently change the composition of the Senate. As of now, races in Alaska, Georgia and Minnesota are still undecided. Moreover, it has yet to be determined what will happen with the spots currently occupied by Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden. And on a process level, the Senate's Steering and Outreach Committee also has the opportunity to make recommendations about committee assignments.

"There are," the source says, "a lot of moving parts. There is genuine suspense around what is going to happen to Lieberman."

8. There's a nice office just inside the 3rd level parking garage
at the Senate office building. A converted bathroom and my source swears they've corrected all the leaks.

I'll even pony up my used space heater.

10. It would be fare more difficult if we had gotten to 60.
but having 57 as opposed to 58 in the caucus is pretty marginal.

He needto be spend the rest of his term (his last term) in ploticalo exile) I don't have a problem withhis position on Iraq because it stems in large measure from his support for Israel. What I can't cou8ntenance is mhis support for vocal and visual support for McCaing on the trail and particularly at the COnvention.

He can be an independent we don't need him chairing committtees.

12. Better think this one out.
To get to 60 votes to end filibuster or whatever may require help from the other side. That would include the 2 Independents.

14. Sad to say, I may agree!
Burning bridges with Joe now may not be the best plan.

It's like McCain, I would love for them to trash him on one hand, but on the other, he may become useful to us for the next few years, before he loses his seat. With Lieberman, we may need to use him before we run him out of town.

Maybe strategy should come before emotion this time.

31. Let's look at it from the flip side
Maybe Joe would like to have those positions back, and so he'll be nicer to Dems from now on.

16. We should not assume that Joe would vote with the Democrats...
even if he were the 60th Senator? The odds are that he would not. He would love to have that leverage. ..Again.

23. do you honestly believe a man who publicly endorsed Mccain will vote with the Dems?
And that Reid hasn't thought of that already?

26. It's called "shake hands with the devil". The magic number is 60.
I think Harry Reid, or whoever is the Majority Leader, will do exactly that - shake hands with the devil - and then go wash them.

32. So what . . . you can't trust Lieberman to vote with you anyway
Dump him, he's a creep.

I always want to remember him as an ugly, troll-like growth protruding out of McCain's shoulder.

39. Like all the times he voted with us these past 2 years?
No, Joe needs to go. The sacrifices that needs to be made to bring aboard a few republicans on any bill won't be nearly as bad as keeping that creep around. He's not our friend. Let that cancer go.

40. More honor in horse trading with an occasional Republican as needed.
than to allow that power mad backstabber Lieberman to exercise any power as a Committee Chairman.
Chairmen are the people who decide whether a bill is called up for consideration by their respective committee. In effect, they are a one person roadblock in the legislative process. In turn, if they ask Chairman of other committees to block specific bills, they usually get their wish, since they will block legislation in return as payback.

Plus, I don't like Lieberman sitting in on Dem caucus meetings because he runs right over to the GOP with all the info. Granted there are always leaks, but usually they take a little time. In fact, I doubt that other Dems feel free to talk in caucus meetings with Lieberman there.

18. Lieberman will undoubtedly send his AIPAC thugs out of hound against this...
If Lieberman loses the security chairmanship, then in turn AIPAC loses their opportunity to continue to shape US foreign policy in Israel's favor. This will be a fight, you watch.
