Shifting demographic trends in states with lots of electoral votes heavily favor the Democratic Party (North Carolina, Virginia, Texas). Barack Obama has layed a foundation that many Democrats will now follow in elections to come (and Republicans will no doubt try to copy). Even though Obama BARELY won NC...there's no doubt that there's room to grow there. TX has an ever-increasing Mexican population that if given the right to vote (many are illegal) could be a HUGE factor in how that state swings in 2012 or 2016. Virginia may also be solidly Democratic if future Dems follow the Obama Plan.
Fact is, the GOP is in deep shit and they know it. The base of their Party has entirely too much control of the Party and opposing views are hard to get through. A pro-choice guy like Rudy Guiliani who may even appeal to MOST Americans on the issues would not stand a chance on the national Republican ticket. The GOP cannot maximize voter turnout and appeal to the middle at the same time because then they'd be speaking out of two sides of the mouths. McCain TRIED to do that and you see how that turned out. Fact is, nuts like Limbaugh and Hannity are doing nothing but holding the Party back and making it nothing more than a regional and narrow-minded image of its older self. What's worse is the GOP can't purge or dampen the Far-Rights hold of the Party without inciting a full-blown Revolution. The impact of the Culture Warriors and Neocons may have done more harm for the GOP than good. Meaning it may have given them current wins...but in the long term maybe this was destined to happen.
Obama needs a manifesto. A declaration of intent and ideas...both for the short term and long term.
But all of this will be determined by how well Obama does his 1st term. If he runs the country the way he ran his campaign (and I see no reason to think why he wouldn't)...2012 will not only be an easy re-election, but it will lay the foundation for an Obama Revolution. An America more Center-Left (not full blown Liberal...that'll never happen). I can see a woman being elected President after Obama possibly. More minorities in positions of power and a growing intellectual middle class that is more observant and thoughtful, than reactionary and cold. These are all very real possibilities that all depends on Obama.
But it will not be easy. In an effort to remain relevant with dwindling numbers (expect them to maybe lose more seats in 2010 including McCain and LIEberman), they will try to attack Obama with everything they can. It will get nasty sometimes for sure. They've already started with attacking the appointment of Rahm Emmanuel to Chief of Staff (though it's not getting much traction). They're going to watch these appointments very carefully. They fear a Progressive shift more than anything.

3. Um--the Karl Marx's seminal work is called "The Communist Manifesto." |

Ever since, the word has had a revolutionary tinge to it. I really don't care myself, but it may freak out the mouth-breathers and the suits on Fox.
