The 2008 presidential race and namely John McCain and Sarah Palin's speeches before their crowds were certainly some of the most divisive and hateful in modern American history. They think they can walk away after such treachery and leave behind the residue of filth that they bestowed to their cheering crowds. And yes, they, like the crimes that Bush and Cheney committed, will go unpunished and fade away.
Children of parents who supported McCain will taunt the children of parents who supported Obama with racist remarks or worse. Seething remarks of hate from pulpits of churches to the followers that echoed in those halls shall dance the dance of evil in the hearts and minds of those who grasped the poisonous dogma of hate and McCarthyistic jingoism. Email boxes will still hold the virtual evidence of messages of hate and bigotry to be perused at any time. Behind the doors and at kitchen tables, McCain supporting parents will spread the diabolical creed of hate, racism and indoctrinate those spawn that can't see the light.
What John McCain does need to do is apologize for what he said, what he inferred and what he propagated while running for President. Yet, knowing how he wilted under the pressure of the Rovian apparachiks who revitalized his nearly dead campaign, he will never have the courage or spiritual mettle to do the right thing. But if he were to somehow miraculously summon some sanity in his head, he might say these words in a brief, succinct apology:
To the American people and those around the World, please accept my humble apology.
I have brought into the American political landscape in this recent Presidential election some of the worst messages to the electorate that can only be compared to the words and deeds of such filth like Joe McCarthy, David Duke, George Wallace, Anita Bryant, Jesse Helms and even Richard Nixon in his darker moments. I have helped spread the message of fear and hate into the political landscape. Many people listened heartily to my charlatan's recipes of spiritual assassination eagerly and for them, I equally apologize for misleading them.
As Lee Atwater said in his fading days, "While I didn't invent negative politics, I was one of its most ardent practitioners." Indeed, I and my cohort in these crimes, Sarah Palin, weaved a web of lies about Barack Obama's love for this country, his loyalty to the American flag, his religious background and indeed fed the monster of racism with fervor and chortled laughter.
As Lee Atwater apologized in his final days for his "naked cruelty" when engaging in negative politics, I, John McCain, offer up my shame for my deeds to the American people and hope you will have the compassion to how how I hit the bottom and kept digging deeper. I, John McCain, can only hope for disdain and shame for my deeds and hope that in time my soiled legacy will slowly turn for the better.
For those that believed what putrid contamination I howled, I misled you. I distorted and contrived the truth. I lied.
May you all forgive me for my calculated evil.
That would be a good concession speech for McCain... and one he will never have the courage to speak. Shame on him.
