‘Maverick’ Zell’s cave of confusion
COBB COUNTY

Saturday, November 15, 2008

More observations about the election from a Cobb County perspective:

The big bear is out from hibernation. Georgia’s mountain man, Zell Miller, has got it all wrong. The big Democratic bear — former governor and U.S. senator — hibernated throughout the long presidential and Senate campaign over the summer and fall only to emerge a few weeks before winter to urge Georgians to vote for Republican Saxby Chambliss in the Dec. 2 runoff election for U.S. Senate. Georgia’s “maverick Democrat” shared the stage Thursday at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre with defeated Republican presidential nominee John McCain warning that the Democrats want a filibuster-proof Senate to back up the “spend-the-wealth, income-distribution” agenda of President-elect Barack Obama. If “maverick” is meant to define a politician uncomfortable with his own party’s values and agenda, no doubt Zell Miller is a maverick. Then again the same could be said for his friend, John McCain. Both guys should have switched parties years ago.

5. It IS just after a full moon
the dead were bound to arise sooner or later. Anyone got a holly stake or some holy water? I'm pretty sure his skin will sizzle if he's either caught out in the daylight or you poke it with something holy.

Bunch of moonshiners, as I recall, Jed. 'Course, they had their bad points, too.

17. OT: Geeky trivia on the Kraken.
"The Kraken is a mythological creature stemming from Norse Origins. It has built a history running through history from ancient sailors to modern day pop culture. Come follow the path of the Giant Squid they call Kraken."

http://www.squidoo.com/krakens

History

Although the name Kraken is sometimes used to refer to any huge sea monster, it originally had a very specific meaning. The Kraken was a giant beast resembling a huge octopus or squid. It was reportedly so large that when it's tentacles were submerged it could be mistaken for an island.
This modern Kraken originated in Norwegian foklore. The first known description occurs in the 1752 History of Norway by Pontoppidian. He said that it was capable of grabbing the largest of ships with its tentacles. When the Kraken submerged it created a whirlpool that could drag the unlucky ship down with it.

There are, of course, many stories of sea beasts around the world. The Kraken of Norwegian mythology is similar to the Lusca reportedly found in the Caribbean. It's possible that some of these tales originated from distant sightings of a giant squid.

In the 19th century Lord Alfred Tennyson published his poem The Kraken which begins:

Below the thunders of the upper deep,
Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth
