Dreams from my Father - the audio version |
|
Apologies to any one who's already listened to the audio version of the book, this is old news!
I bought the (written) book a few months back and just found it absorbing, moving, fascinating, amazing...etc, etc, etc - and SO beautifully written (of course, as we know, it was penned by Bill Ayers :eyes:....or was that The Audacity of Hope...I get my Freeper conspiracy theories muddled).
But a few days ago I bought the audio version from iTunes - which, I think, is just an abridged version - and it really is glorious to actually hear Barack Obama's voice reading the book. For example, very early in the book he writes about receiving that phone call from his Aunt in Kenya to tell him his father had died in a car accident - actually listening to him speak the words just brings it all to life and makes it doubly moving, even if the words are stunningly vivid too.
Generally I hate the idea of audiobooks - unless you are visually impaired I always felt audiobooks were for the lazy! - but I'd strongly recommend this one. Listening to him mimic conversations involving his grandparents, in a loving and amused kind of way, is sweet, it just brings a whole new dimension to the book.
Just thought I'd let you know, if you have a spare few dollars it's worth it.

2. I listened to "The Audacity of Hope" |
|
also read by him. I'm a big fan of audiobooks but it was nice to hear him read it and it helped give me a lot of insight into his positions on issues and overall philosophy. *sigh* It's wonderful to have a SMART President again. :)

4. You won't believe this but we were just listening to this last night |

It resonates so much more now - learning about the people and events that have shaped this great man who will be our next president. "Dreams" is a window into Barack's soul. It's crystal clear honesty about his coming of age. He is such a wonderful writer and his narration spot on. I cried listening to the bits about Toots.

6. A close friend of mine who's a republican... |
|
told me how her 22 yr. old daughter insisted on listening to this on a recent trip in the car. Both my friend and her conservative husband ended up voting for Obama, based on what they learned about him on this audiotape!

7. Interesting to know that |

I am reading Dreams From My Father right now. Last year I read The Audacity of Hope. His first book is definately more complex and indepth in terms of his background.
