IA-Sen, IA-Gov: Statewide Recruitment Thread
GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley, who will turn 77 in 2010, is getting a bit long in the tooth. It wouldn't be surprising to see him retire rather than seek another term. If he does, who do you like to run for his seat? Despite Iowa's bright shade of blue in recent years, I'm not sure that we'd be able to recruit anyone of note without a vacancy here.
And while were at it, are there any Republicans with a deathwish who want to take on Governor Chet Culver? 5th CD Rep. Steve King, perhaps?

1. I could see King wanting a run.
IIRC he's in bed with the fundies big time.

2. Maybe Vilsack could make a run for Senate
Lets just hope he puts more into it than he did into his presidential campaign.

3. Seconded on Vilsack...
He's a DLCer but I'd rather see him in the Senate than Grassley or worse, King.

4. Also, this time he needs to not play "The Final Countdown" at his announcement speech
That was just too prophetic.

5. Ought to post this in the Iowa forum
we seem to have one of these discussions about once a month.
As for senator, if Chuckles stays on I have already heard some names that I won't disclose as yet. If he retires I could see one of the Vilsacks taking a shot. Maybe a Braley or less likely Loebsack. But I don't see Grassley retiring unless being in a real minority eats at him.
As for King, I think he is fully aware that is he steps outside that caccoon he is toast. After 2010 he and Latham may be fighting over the same piece of turf.
