Obama adviser once critical of Clinton is back

By MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press Writer Matthew Lee, Associated Press Writer – Fri Nov 28, 4:58 pm ET

WASHINGTON – An adviser to Barack Obama's presidential campaign who was forced to resign earlier this year after calling Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton a "monster" is now working on the transition team for the agency Clinton is expected to lead.

State Department officials said Friday that Samantha Power is among a group of foreign policy experts that the president-elect's office selected to help the incoming administration prepare for Clinton's anticipated nomination as secretary of state. The Obama transition team's Web site includes Power's name as one of 14 members of the "Agency Review Team" for the State Department.

Clinton's role at State is expected to be announced after the Thanksgiving weekend. Power's apparent rehabilitation is another sign of that impending move.

Clinton's office declined to comment on Power's inclusion in the State Department transition, but an official close to the Obama transition team said Power had "made a gesture to bury the hatchet" with Clinton and that it had been well-received.

Power has been given an official State Department e-mail address and has been seen in the building, said the State officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the transition. A State Department spokesman referred questions to Obama's transition team, which later declined to comment.

1. Uh, yeah. And a politician once critical of Obama ...
... is his nominee-to-be for Secretary of State.

Funny how that goes.

3. "Nominee-to-be." Are you basing that on strategic leaks not coming from the Obama camp?
Edited on Fri Nov-28-08 08:35 PM by AtomicKitten
He will nominate his SoS next week. He is looking at other candidates as well (Richardson, Kerry, etc.), people that have respected the secret vetting process by not leaking it all over the place, so it really could be anyone.

On edit: On Samantha Power being back in the mix I say hooray!

6. Article in OP says Clinton camp had no comment, but that an offical close to Obama's team did.
Edited on Fri Nov-28-08 08:51 PM by Skip Intro

So I'm not sure who is really doing the leaking.

I'm also not sure the vetting process should be secret.

In any case, I'm glad to read that Hillary was open to "burying the hatchet" with Power. It is a logical, mature, and wise response a lot of Hillary's critics here and elswhere could take a lesson from.

33. Actually that "leak" from the Obama camp
which was referenced in the OP was about, and I quote, "an official close to the Obama transition team said Power had "made a gesture to bury the hatchet" with Clinton and that it had been well-received."

Just wanted to make clear that this "leak" had nothing to do with any possible SoS nomination.

2. Good. It was unfair that her remark got out.
While saying "off the record" a split second after you make an offhand and entirely comment may not meet the technical requirements of what passes for journalistic ethos, the intent was pretty damn clear. You can't complain that somebody badmouthed an opponent when they specifically said they didn't want to be quoted.

36. You cannot claim amnesty AFTER the fact. Powers showed a troubling lack of self-control to say
something so heinous and over-the-top about an American Presidential candidate, Democratic Senator, and former First Lady. Powers should have no contact with the public or the press. She may be smart, but she's MONSTROUSLY undisciplined and overdramatic. It seems she's figured out how to respect and toe the line of her bosses (Hillary and Barack). Hopefully, she won't be giving any interviews.

Edited on Fri Nov-28-08 08:35 PM by S_E_Fudd

A few hours after her comments were published, Power announced her resignation, saying the remarks were inexcusable and contradictory to her admiration for Clinton.

Given the class by which Hillary conducts herself I am sure she would not want this to get in the way of having a valuable and talented person working on the transition...

12. Think about it
The Clintons did make some huge anti-progressive blunders. And they are definitely beholden to the MIC. And Gates staying on at the DoD is a knuckling under to the MIC.

Obama is in some deep stuff, and probably needs some powerful people who hold hands with the MIC, but who lean progressive, to help stem the tide that carried bush along for so long.

Something to think about?

Let's just ignore everything else she ever did or said or wrote; Samantha Power is nothing more than one seven-letter word anymore. Power being back is fantastic, but everyone seems to want to overshadow that with one utterance she castigated herself over immediately.

And people wonder why I can't stand North American coverage of this whole election/transition. Ugh.

And the realities of politics are such that an outreach would be said to be "well recieved" even if the two people hated each other's living guts. Not that I'm saying it's necessarily the case here, but that item is pretty much meaningless.

Everyone already knows, its not a secret. Not to mention thats its the only logical step for any politician at this point.

Its a well known fact that that 55% of the population wanted her to win the primary and since things haven't gone ideally, recent pools have shown that 64% want her as SOS. You can look this up on the internet.

Obama is only keeping silent about this because this is what Hillary wants. She is a master strategist the likes of which most of us cannot comprehend. Once the magnitude of her plan is revealed, you will see clearly as if the rain had gone and you can see all obstacles in your way.

try to show so patient and stop drinking from the MSM bar. Your drunk with foolishness.

I am not being negative. I am stating reality. Obama is our president. He is selecting his cabinet, and, he may well select Clinton as one of his cabinet members. This event is neither more or less important than his other cabinet selections.

The force that will change America is the sum total of his administration, with Obama at the head.

This is definitely very positive.

70. Obama may be the head BUT
Hillary is clearly the torso. As we all know, my foolish friend, the torso contains the heart. Logic of course brings us to the age old dilemma regarding survival: i.e. which is more important, the head or the heart.

Science now tells us that the heart is clearly the more important organ as the body can be kept alive by machine if the brain is dead.

This proving my point that Hillary is the most important member of the administration, even barring the Obama head. I would also point out the the head is where the EGO lives.

OWNED!!!!
