Per Rachel.

I hope it's Caroline Kennedy now.

6. Cuomo may be an extremely good choice.

From his Wiki:

Governor Cuomo, a Democrat, received a 74 percent favorable rating, above those received by Governors Pataki, Carey and Rockefeller. The Marist Poll Director said "When people reflect, people look back and say: 'Mario Cuomo, pretty good governor.'"

11. Mario or Andrew?
I've heard Andrew Cuomo's name bandied about. I wasn't under the impression that his father was interested in getting back into politics.

He was a pretty good governor.

Regards

3. Is this an inherited or awarded seat?
How come the voters of NY don't get to decide on their own Senator? Must they endure a non-stop parade of political aspirants?

8. Because that is how it works in almost every state
if a Senator resigns, the Governor picks a replacement.

If you aren't happy with the names being bandied about, what are the alternatives you have in mind and why do you think they would do a good job as a Senator, and have good chances in getting reelected (being that this is a Democratic message board and we like to have Democrats, if they are doing a good job, stay in office).

People get into politics to run for political office. And then move on to the next one. If you are constantly searching for fresh faces every two, four or six years, we'd have a pretty ineffectual government.

13. There's going to be a special election for Senate in 2010.
We will get our vote then. But in the meantime it's an appointment. This is not different from other states.

4. Anyone else put off at Chuck Todd's comment that Cuomo
"Wouldn't want to lose to 'another' African American" ? WTH??? If I'm too sensitive, then, okay. But I found this astoundingly... um... wrong.

Anyone else catch the statement? It was during Chris Matthews' show on msnbc.... I was surprised Matthews didn't jump all over him - but instead he seemed to agree and move on. Maybe I'm tired - but I didn't like it.

5. Could this mean that RFK Jr. is under consideration for a cabinet position?
Possibly EPA, Energy, or Interior?

7. According to his sister, Kennedy's on Patterson's short list, and she's very
enthusiastic about his taking it, if offered.

9. And RFK was very enthusiastic in his statement today, straight from the man himself
that he does not want to take the seat.

15. Well, there you have it. : ) Absolute confirmation that:

We don't know until we know. Well said.

Speculation is great good fun, (and the news industry would be in worse shape than the "big 3" without it), but that's all it is...

When an announcement is made, I think that may be when we have a pretty good sense as to who it'll be. Until then, we can all have fun guessing but it isn't more significant than that. : )

12. He's a convicted criminal and a believer in anti-vaccine pseudoscience.
I think he's only "under consideration" in a few circles of the left-wing blogosphere.

17. I'd like to see State Senator Tom Duane get the position.
We need an open LGBT person in the Senate.
