New Obama New Yorker Cover
From the cartoonist who brought us the terorist-fist-jab, this one is pretty great. I bet there would be dogs lined up to be "first puppy", if they could figure out how to apply online.

1. Is this demeaning to the P.E.?
The issues facing this country far outweigh what pet the Obama's adopt in terms of importance.
If it's supposed to be sarcastic social commentary, it's poorly executed in it's approach.

3. I think it's supposed to be funny and cute
Not social commentary, sarcastic or otherwise.

6. A better (funnier) illustration would be to have Clinton, Richardson, Daschle, etc.
standing in line along with just one dog. At least there's the sense of importance and urgency in what the P.E. is doing.

Besides, wasn't * originally depicted as funny and cute?

I'm ready for the next President to be the symbol for intelligence, creativity, integrity, street-smarts, compassion...

8. And an involved father?
Yes, I want that too. In fact, a role model of an involved father might be the most important thing we need right now. A damn sight better than "whining pool" Bush.

I don't find this demeaning at all.
I find it to be kind of heartwarming.

and I hope/expect that many of those who see it will agree. He did say, in Walters interview, that he's been inundated with puppy suggestions from We the People!

17. Some dogs, such as poodles, grow hair instead of fur.
People with dog allergies are less allergic to dogs with hair.

I had heard about the hypoallergenic issue, but did not know it was related to hair and fur. Very interesting.

And how are you? Did you go to the Cancer Treatment Center?

so when we were looking for a dog, we had to stick to dogs like Poodles.

22. I'm getting the little fellow with the brown nose.
I don't know if it's a male or female.

I probably will get another older pup rescued the same day.

This particular shelter finds homes for 90% of the animals they rescue. :)

I haven't had a dog for a long time so it was a big decision.

24. I lost mine last month
She was 13, had bone cancer. We had decided not to get another one, but all these puppy pics are really breaking my heart. I'm thinking I should contact our humane society and do some foster care. That way I'll have some dog companionship, but can still travel if the economy ever gets better. I just really am not sure I want a long term committment after 30 years of kids and pets...

25. OMGZ- this is not good at all!
The unwashed masses will think that the cover is implying that Obama is appointing dogs to fill all of his cabinet positions!!1! What will Joe Six-Pack, who catches the New Yorker cover while browsing through the magazine stand at his local Stop-n-Go, think?!?!

27. Apparently...
I recall one of the arguments of the DUers freaking out over the earlier Obama New Yorker cover being that the folks in flyover country were going to see the Obama-as-terrorist cover at the gas station and take it seriously!

28. I'm surprised nobody has noted the canine-applicant theme and declared it to be..

...a veiled sexist epithet directed at Hillary.

Are all of the dogs on that cover male?

Some folks ability to "get" whimsical visual commentary is seriously impaired.
