“conservatives — and Bill Clinton — were right about welfare as it was previously structured: By detaching income from work and by making no demands on welfare recipients other than a tolerance for intrusive bureaucracy and an assurance that no man lived in the same house as the mother of his children, the old A.F.D.C. program sapped people of their initiative and eroded their self respect.”

And that is why an FDR type of public works program, like Obama is proposing, will do more to lift people out of the current economic mess and makes more sense than handing out checks.

3. Agree. It definitely eroded self respect. And it encouraged people to belittle |
|
the recipients. It also promoted the breakup of families, which encouraged jerks to make all sorts of disgusting accusations against the families who need assistance.

4. I thought Welfare was supposed to help a person |
|
to become self-sufficient. If you don't attach Welfare to work or income, then can't everyone who doesn't feel like working jump on the dole? If we the people are giving money (via the Fed) to needy individuals, shouldn't they be held accountable in some respect?
