Does an inauguration invocation (speech) equal any power in this administration? |
|
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 07:15 PM by stevietheman
Nope.
So, while I'm gay, I'm not outraged. Disappointed, yes.
But Warren doesn't get to make one decision for the people. Not one.

Just as the election was pretty much ruined by Prop8.

The history of the word:
A person who is bigoted : religious bigots. See note at zealot . ORIGIN late 16th cent. (denoting a superstitious religious hypocrite): from French, of unknown origin

17. Yes -- it actually does. |
|
The first words we will hear from the new administration -- after George Bush vacates the White House -- will be the bigot Rick Warren. That sets the tone for the administration.
That is an extremely powerful statement.
Obama is essentially anointing Warren as the "pope of America."

common ground, people, common ground. and i could give 2 shits about these religious nuts, but i wish i had a nickel for every time al franken pointed out the hypocrisy of fundies who don't give a shit about the poor. i wouldn't really know, but i hear tell that is part of the warren schtick. more power to that.
that was obama's message, tho- we must get past our differences to move forward. together.

21. Yes, the power of the bully pulpit |
|
The power to use a public forum that millions upon millions of people will see to do things that connote leadership and send messages, both explicit and implicit. I want the implicit message sent that gay bashing is so last century. If Obama cannot help lead us away from this bigotry, then who will?

to the OLD way of thinking of Warren and his ilk in comparison to the NEW way of thinking of the guy giving the benediction (who is quite progressive). He may be using this as a way of demonstrating CHANGE.

If you want to defend them, that's your perogative.
If you want to argue that this carefully produced event doesn't matter, you might consider that Obama disagrees with you.

I'm not gay, but if I were, I'd regard Warren praying for the nation as a kind of noose.

Hanging a noose, burning a cross; those are not just symbolic, those a threats to people lives. Nutjob Warren speaking, while odious and a bad decision, is just him talking. He will not say one thing about gays at the inauguration.
How you can compare noose-hanging and an invocation prayer is beyond me.

whether a preacher speaking at Obama's inauguration agrees with me 100% on gay rights.
If we go into a depression, I may even forget I'm gay!

If you're going to betray your base, make it pay-off with something.
This is zero-profit.
