The mods on this board are good and fair |
|
I have a great deal respect for all of them and they work hard at keeping it fair on here.
If you think you are being unfairly attacked or your thread has been hijacked by the issue of the day use the Alert button.

|
You know why we don't have vicious race-wars on DU? It wouldn't be tolerated.
There are plenty of crazy internet bigots who would love to come here and rant, but they'd be TSed before they got started.
But the most offensive bile directed against gays is treated as one side of a vital dialog.
Ha!

|
Thank you. I agree.
It is a disgrace.
Obviously the moderators allow gay discrimination for 1 or 2 reasons:
1) They don't think that gays should have the right to marry (they think that gays shouldn't be afforded the same rights as inter-racial couples - the lepers of society in the 50's). note - I'm an inter-racial child.
2) They know that so many "progressive" Democrats on this board would be tombstoned if they enforced anti-gay bigotry. It would be a loss of revenue. (this is the more likely reason)
20-40 years from now, things will be different. I'm just sad that they aren't today.
Thanfully everything on the internet is recorded for history. I know I'll be proven correct one day. Here's looking at you, future generations.

30. I'm a moderator. I'm gay. I disagree. We work damn hard to facilitate discussion here. |
|
We don't "allow gay discrimination".
We allow discussion within the parameter of our membership agreement (the rules). Things aren't always well defined, or cut 'n dried in a broad based forum such as this.
And we don't determine the trends of discussion. Our members determine that.
We moderators all, as well as our Administrators, support equal rights. That includes our gay brothers and sisters.

39. Ok, well the rules suck. |
|
Right and wrong should be "well defined" when it comes to bigotry.
Someone against interracial marriage would be banned or at the least have their post deleted.
I'm sorry to offend you as a gay moderator... but maybe you should realize that the rules should be changed.
This discussion would be embarrassing in the future for Progressives. And it will be recorded on the internet for future generations to see. I hope DU won't have egg on it's face.

42. I hope you had the chance to read Skinner's OP on this. |
|
He made the policy of the site very clear in a post to his thread:
"We expect members to support full and equal rights. That includes gay marriage. There are large parts of this country where gay marriage is not popular. There are many places in this country where gay marriage would not fly, but civil unions might be an attainable goal. Indeed, in almost every state, civil unions would be a step in the right direction. I don't see why people shouldn't be able to say so, and support efforts to enact civil unions.
But let me be clear: Civil unions are not a substitute for marriage. They are not equal. As a stepping stone to marriage, yes, they are an improvement. But civil unions are not the ultimate goal. Equality is the goal, and we expect everyone here to support that goal. Equality means marriage for gays and straights."
If you see members violating this rule, please alert on them. We can not see everything posted here, but, if alerted, we will act.
:hugs:

6. Boy do I agree with this. Just last week I was reflecting on how difficult it would be to be a |

I encourage you to volunteer sometime, Marrah. I didn't think I could take it, either, because I don't have a lot of patience, but then I decided I should try. It's been an education and a surprise. Things really look different from back there and the collaborative work with the other mods is something I wouldn't have wanted to miss. So, I'm glad I did it.

40. I think most all DUers are passionate about something. |
|
If we weren't, we'd be over at Milquetoast Underground, right? When you mod, you don't lose your passion, but you do learn how to be more... diplomatic when posting on the board. But also, your passion kind of shifts from passionately discussing politics openly on the board to passionately keeping the board a safe place for others to discuss politics. (Easier said than done, some days.)
Added bonus: sometimes you get to tombstone Freepers and trolls, which of course is the bestest feeling in the world! :D

31. Dearest Mike 03 - you are one of the members who made me feel welcome and |
|
heard here. I think you have the compassion and insight to be a moderator. There are times when you must have a very thick skin, and that is the thing you might want to think upon if you decide to apply for this position.
We truly care for and respect our members and try to hear all of their differing views, but we sometimes make decisions that cause members to become very angry with us, and that can be hard.
