Obama and Family Venture Out in Hawaii

By Philip Rucker
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, December 27, 2008; Page A02

snip//

On the way back to his Kailua vacation home, the president-elect stopped at the bustling Koko Marina Center for a bite (coincidentally allowing the pool to catch up with him). "So, what are we going to get?" Obama asked at the counter of Koko Marina Paradise Deli.

"Let me get a tuna sandwich," he said, asking for it on 12-grain bread with tomatoes. (Hold the mayo, he said.) "Actually, can you melt cheese on that? Can you make, like, a tuna melt with cheddar cheese?"

Carrying his sandwich, Obama walked with his daughters, Sasha and Malia, to Kokonuts to order "shave ice," a treat akin to a snow cone. As dozens of onlookers swarmed the shop, snapping pictures and saying hello, Obama ordered for his daughters and several other children.

"Everyone, once you've ordered, step back," Obama instructed the kids. "We're going to do it one at a time." He pulled out his wallet and paid for the shave ice with cash. (Eric Whitaker, a close friend from Chicago, pitched in to cover the tab.)

Obama joked with reporters that he ate his sandwich before his dessert to set an example for his daughters. He then enjoyed a green-and-orange shave ice.

He also offered to buy the journalists some.

"Guys, here's your chance," Obama said. "No? I'm telling you, this is really good."

No one took him up on the offer.

1. Should have taken him up on his offer
Shaved ice is the greatest. I make mine with black cherry flavor, which you can do without adding sugar.

9. Num!
.
.

Black cherry shaved ice..

I wonder what flavor the one Obama ordered was? It says: "He then enjoyed a green-and-orange shave ice"

Green and orange?.. ...lime-something?

24. Where do you get one in Houston??
Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 02:07 AM by DangerousRhythm
What I miss from NYC, which is essentially the same thing, is piraguas, especially coconut... but I have not found any here in Houston yet.

For the piraguas deprived: http://www.dollarman.com/puertorico/piragua.html :)

26. They are usually at little stands
Often worked by teenagers. There was one by our old Wally World (operated independently), and I used to go there just for the ice, but that store is closed, replaced by another Super Wally World just around the corner at a loss of about 5 acres of trees while the old store stands empty. But I digress.

Down Sawdust Road in Stepford, er, The Woodlands, there is one on the south side of the street. It operates seasonally.

Just keep an eye out, especially at festivals. I've seen them occasionally in Montrose in the summer and down in Galveston.

7. There was a small store just off campus at Punahou
(where Obama went to high school). I graduated in '68. The store had shave ice for 10 cents, and they are 'way better than snow cones.

19. Humph! Those were the days...
when I arrived here, just after the Selection, I lived one block 'Ewa (roughly, west) of Barack's alma mater. By then the nearest store was nearly a half-mile away in either direction. And I do not drive... three years I stayed there...

Oh yes, one of my all-time favorite females is P'92. She's on the mainland (NYC), too...

I thought he was into "coconut kine" 'ono local cuisine like Zippy's and Rainbow Drive-In. Now he orders something like my old boss would have, precipitating gales of laughter as soon as her back was turned.

I mean, really, I can put up with Warren, but this?! :sarcasm:

"We're going to get a plate lunch someplace, guaranteed. We're going to get shave ice, guaranteed. I will go body surfing at an undisclosed location, guaranteed," Obama said with a smile."

28. Tuna has high levels of mercury
It is recommended that people restrict eating tuna to no more than once a month.

http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/admehg3.html

Some species of tuna have become depleted.
