For those who want Burris seated |
|
get ready for a decade of Illinois being a red state, because that is 100% what will happen.
Don't say you weren't warned.

3. I think there is a good chance the Repukes win this seat |
|
Lets not forget this was a Repuke held seat before Obama won it. So lets not act like its not possible they can win it. I thought the Dems needed a strong candidate to be appointed. So they would be running for reelection.
Now they'll have a weak candidate appointed and a pissed off electorate, who might make the Dems pay for Blago's BS

7. And Fitzgerald won this seat because of Mosley Braun's scandals |
|
And Blagojevich won the governorship because of Ryan's scandal.
Illinois voters tend to go with the party that has the fewer scandals during the current election cycle. That Blagojevich won a second term was a miracle due to teh fact that the IL GOP was ina compelte state of disarray after the Ryan scandal.

|
that Blago was arrested. It's going to the Repukes anyway. Might as well stand on principle and the IL state constitution and seat Burris.

|
Sorry, but it's a fact.
Look at why Blagojevich got elected in 2002 in the first place.
Then go figure out why Pete Fitzgerald held this seat from 1999 to 2005.

"Red State" denotes the result of the presidential election. I think that your phrasing is primarily what people are taking issue with.

but we sure are going to lose a senate seat and the governorship. I find it somewhat interesting how there are so many here who with a passion want Burris seated. All the many Illinois Democrats I know are in a total depression about all of this and without exception they despise Burris for accepting this appointment. I am sure there are those who like Burris but I sure haven't found any.

from two men with their own agendas that doesn't have anything to do with helping the Democratic Party. zidzi (1000+ posts) Mon Jan-05-09 06:44 PM Response to Original message 13. "Mr Burris Goes To Washington" <snips> "Right now I just want to say one thing: I don't know much about this guy or his career thus far, however, he has already started out firmly on my bad side. Maybe he would have been a decent choice for a legitimate governor to appoint, I don't know, but what I do know is that I don't like him, and from what I've seen he is a complete moron. Why? Well...
1) He actually accepted the job (which was turned down by at least one other person first) from a person who is pretty much unanimously seen as illegitimate. Suffice to say, he showed pretty bad judgment. To me, it looks like he wanted power, and this was the only way it was going to happen. Better to accept it from a crook, than to not have it at all, right Burris?
2) He came out of the gate threatening Democrats, vowing to go to court to weasel his way into the Senate, against the wishes of pretty much everyone. Sense of entitlement, anyone?
3) Without skipping a beat, he also claimed that the would be "a major outcry" from the people of Illinois if he wasn't seated, because a corrupt man who Illinois voters overwhelmingly agreed should not be able to make the appointment, made it. Delusions of grandeur, anyone?
4) And as if that wasn't all bad enough, last night he said this, of his epic quest to claw his way into the Senate: "We are hoping and praying that they will not be able to deny what the Lord has ordained." Excuse me? "what the Lord has ordained"?? The Lord? Is that what we are calling Governor Rod "Bleepin' Golden" Blagojevich now? The Lord? I don't know what is worse, that Burris actually seems to think Blago is god or an instrument of god, or that Burris actually seems to think that god gives a shit about him filling this Senate seat. Hey Burris, GET OVER YOURSELF!
Oh yeah, and here comes the bonus round:
5) Hey, Rep. Bobby Rush, STFU!: At the sendoff event for Roland Burris last night, Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) continued to present the controversy around Burris' appointment in strictly racial terms. Rush declared that the resistance of the Democratic leadership to seating Burris was "the last bastion of racial plantation politics in America."<<<<more>>>> http://www.thepersonalispolitical.com/ http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=8059261&mesg_id=8059663

16. After this entire fiasco, it'll probably go RED anyway. If there was a Special Election |
|
as Durbin suggested, IL would've gone RED. But after the spectacle that has taken place, it's going RED anyway. That's why the Repukes are so happy and want this to continue. The moment that Blago's alleged transgressions came to light, the M$M tied him to Obama and had a field day. When a Democrat is corrupt, the entire party is painted as corrupt. The same treatment is not afforded to Repukes. Still nothing about Ted Stevens who has actually been convicted for much worse than what Blago is alleged to have done. Then CNN and other shows counted down their top 3 corrupt politicians: ALL WERE DEMOCRATS! Blago, Spitzer and John Edwards. ALL DEMOCRATS!! The double standard is baffling. The Repukes and the M$M do a great job demonizing Democrats. For the Democrats to join in the ridicule is just sickening.

If the people of Illinois decide in the future to lawfully elect a Republican senator, then that senator should be seated in the Senate.

more because I don't think he would be reelected than anything else but the case for not doing so from a "rule of law" perspective is pretty weak. If you have a solution that doesn't make the party look like sewage then that's great but I think it is an uphill battle keeping the guy out.

28. I originally didn't want him seated |

but legally, I still don't know what should be stopping the Senate from seating him since Blago, unfortunately still is the legally acting governor of the state of Illinois and was when he appointed Burris. The Il legislature should have impeached him immediately.
My guess is he'll be seated sooner, rather than later (sooner, being within the next week or so). Burris may not be dirty but he's a damn egotistical fool for accepting the offer. It tells me a lot about his character.
