in this case there's probably not a lot of difference between MSL and AGL.

I assume it has something to do with sea level. Actually, when it comes to the GWB, there is a difference. The GWB is built on a higher part of Manhattan, Washington Heights, and is probably a couple of hundred feet above sea level. Then the bridge itself is a couple of hundred feet tall.

My brother lives up in Hackensack (ack ack ack)and I visit him from time to time and we cross the bridge. I would guess the deck is about 150 to 200 feet up from the river. I did forget that the northern end of the island is much higher than the southern end - thanks for the reminder.
