Obama may not lift stem cell limits
By CARRIE BUDOFF BROWN Updated: 1/17/09 10:23 AM EST

Political observers had expected him to move swiftly to reverse President Bush’s 2001 executive order.

PHILADELPHIA – President-elect Barack Obama signaled Friday that he might not use his executive authority to reverse Bush-era limits on stem cell research, but instead might wait for Congress to change the policy.

Obama pledged during the campaign to lift the restrictions, and political observers had expected him to move swiftly to reverse President Bush’s 2001 executive order – most likely with his own executive order.

But the president-elect suggested Friday that he would wait for Congress to weigh in on the issue.

8. Do you understand the reasoning? There is a logical reason which has nothing to do with backbone.

Yes it is good reasoning.

the rest, then I will try to be patient with these types of announcements. But his being soft on these types of crimes makes me suspicious of everything right now. Sure, he just got into office, I'm just sayin'.

41. nothing prevents both.
executive order to move things along now.

Congress can get to it when and if the Senate "democrats" ever figure out how to pass anything.

that's the big picture that he has so far seemed to have hinted has gotten away from him. So "big picture" assessments are not what I expect from his at the moment. Just sayin'.

4. The reason - if it was ended through congressional legislation signed by President Obama then
it can't be overturned by an Executive Order - which it could be if he just did an executive order.

23. Precisely. I heard his explanation and I agree
Politico grossly simplified what President Obama said. :eyes: And the OP thought it was a good idea to slam President Obama on his Inauguration night with incomplete facts.

37. If we had a Republican President but could filibuster it in the Senate or if we controlled the
House then a future President can't undo it.

You get real. There is a big difference in the staying power of an Executive Order vs. a Law passed by Congress and signed by the President.

5. Not at all.
He stated that congress passing legislation is stronger and a better way to go,
most likely due to getting specific funding.

BUT He didn't say he wouldn't do a thing if they didn't pass it.

Stem Cell is a winner as something to vote for.

Edited on Tue Jan-20-09 09:13 PM by Enrique
why alienate pro-lifers unnecessarily when congresspeople can take the hit?

on edit: this pro-life source sees it as bad for them...

http://www.lifenews.com/bio2702.html

Although Obama couched his potential decision to wait on Congress in terms of making it a representative one, doing so also makes it more difficult for a future pro-life president to reverse Obama's actions.

Instead of issuing a subsequent executive order, a future pro-life president would be forced to rely on Congress to approve a bill putting the Bush protections back in place. With a Congress strongly in favor of embryonic stem cell research funding, that appears unlikely.

6. If this doesn't get done, he won't get my vote in 2012
Period. It would be a gamechanger for me politically.

However, I have no doubt that it will get through within the next few months. It's idiotic to not just sign an executive order, but whatever. As long as it gets done.
