So, how did your place of work handle the Inauguration?
Since I work from home, work was called off so i could watch every minute (although I did have to keep the sound down during my husband's conference call)

My son said everyone was watching on line until they crashed the internet. Then they went to the nearby house of one of the employees to continue watching.

1. I stayed home today. But, our non profit hospice our boss encouraged us to
take time to watch it and if people were in the office they were playing it on tv in the conference room.

Edited on Tue Jan-20-09 09:00 PM by dmordue
They said there was not enough band space for all of us to live stream it in our offices. Others had it playing on their radio by their desks.

5. Every news website was blocked.
Normally, I can get to newspaper sites to read articles, but not today. Streaming is verboten anyway, but I guess the company decided not to allow anyone to be tempted.

Some locations of my company have televisions in break rooms, and the inauguration was on there. My office has no TV. It was Tuesday for us.

28. That's a good attitude. Just curious if perhaps they were particularly upset with
the new administration for some reason. I'm glad you feel okay about it and didn't have a bad day! My boss had asked if we could have a TV and I reminded her we don't have cable or an antenna! Our TV's are all just monitors for viewing video and power point.

I've wanted to congratulate someone today on their new president. I'll make that you. Congratulations. I'm sure you deserve it.:hi:

...of employees. Plus a great deal of our work is web-based, so streaming could have adversely affected us getting our jobs done.

Thanks for the congratulations. Congratulations to you, too! :hi:

We could get out of jury duty because they would not pay us for day we served.

11. Tuesday is a slow day
without office hours for the doctor--so we could do what we wanted, sort of. There is no TV, and no sound cards on the computers. So I brought a radio and we watched the streaming video on yahoo. It was strange because video and audio weren't in sync. Funny thing was that for about an hour around the time of inauguration, we didn't have anyone call or drop in.

14. Tried to watch online.
But apparently everybody else was trying to watch online, too, because about 15 minutes before Obama's address we all got an email from the IT department asking us to please stop watching streaming videos because we were totally clogging the network and slowing down actual work stuff. So I listened to the address on my iPhone using an app that accesses a local public radio station. There were also people watching tv in a conference room.

27. The secretaries at the front desk watched it livestream on their computers
which meant the patients in the waiting room got to hear him take office so that was kind of cool. Especially since we don't have a real TV in the waiting room just a loop of health related commercials.
I made sure that any patients that needed injections came back into the room where our TV is located and we all watched it together as I gave them their shots, we all applauded right after he finished getting sworn in...a patient and I high fived :-)
Our TV in that room sucks 99% of the time but it had really good reception right as VP Biden and President Obama got sworn in (well, compared to what we normally get--we didn't have to keep a hand on the rabbit ear antenna for a change!
I know several who went back to the break room to watch the TV there.

about 9:30-10:30 PST.

I ended up not taking them up on it; I just stayed home and watched it. I can remote in to work though, so it actually was a net gain in productivity, compared to the company's expectation.

But my company is actually incredibly cool to its employees. We had a snowstorm for about a week, and the office was mostly closed. The board quickly agreed to pay the hourlies for the time missed. That was right before Christmas - I thought it was an incredibly compassionate gesture.

Everyone was in good spirits. Except one incident, which I could be mistaken but I doubt it. One of the co-workers got a call on her cell and I heard her tell the person on the other line "well you will have to watch it because I'm not watching that crap". I know she was talking about the inauguration. It didn't bother me because I figure she was a big Bush supporter.

59. We all got a memo at around 10:00AM
that there were TVs set up in several locations in the building. We were invited to watch 'at our convenience' between 12:00 and 2:00. The rooms were filling up at 11:30. There was cheering and crying. It was very moving. I'm in a Welfare to Work office and all the waiting rooms had TVs too so the clients could watch. Yes, there were a couple of people who stayed in their offices or cubes. Somehow I can't understand that.

I hope that Obama does a major overhaul of the Welfare program. It's badly broken and needs fixing badly.
