I am SO not interested in the fashion obsession...
Edited on Tue Jan-20-09 09:24 PM by ddeclue
I really don't care what dress somebody wore...

This isn't an inauguration thing...

I feel the same way about all the fashion gawkers and fashion police who critique what people wear to the Oscars too.

I am fascinated by politics.

I am fascinated by film.

I couldn't give a damn about all the snooty fashionatti.

1. Then why start a thread about how much you aren't interested in fashion?
Why not just ignore the threads about dresses, which do interest other people?

3. Because it is how I feel about it.
It's not simply a matter of "ignoring" it, I actively am repulsed by it.

I find it distracting, and particularly inegalitarian.

It's snobbish.

I guess the rest of us are a bunch of elitist snobs. I loved Michelle's dress, by the way, and Dr. Biden's boots were awesome.

YMMY?

I fail to see what someone wears to an event adds or detracts from the acts which brought them there be it Hollywood or Washington.

by complaining about her dress.

Thanks for the magic decoder ring though.

48. That is one fine-looking dress! Of course, it really isn't very important,
and I personally would have just as much admiration and respect for her if she had decided to wear blue-jeans instead. And of course I hope DUers will usually focus mainly on more substantive matters. But the lady looks great in that dress! :bounce: You go, girl!

47. grab a clue and stop being hypocritical
it's no more inegalitarian than critiquing film or other visual arts. Just because YOU don't get why fashion is an art, doesn't mean that it's not. Why do you think there are collections in museums? Fashion is indeed an art.

24. Some things but I'm not one of those guys who orders ever sports channel on cable..
I follow my college basketball and football teams - Georgia Tech.

I follow the Atlanta Braves.

I will watch the Olympics.

I will watch some College Bowl games and the NCAA Basketball tournament.

I will watch the World Series.

I sometimes watch ultimate fighting or a boxing match.

I have gone to a few Braves games and a few Marlins games.

I could care less about NASCAR, Hockey, Pro Basketball, Pro Football, Tennis, Golf, and most anything else you could think of in sports.

26. I would agree with you.. It isn't really news..it belongs on a sports channel
There may be some things sports related which are news if a sports figure dies or gets a big contract or something but who wins and loses really isn't "news". ESPN is where it belongs. I'd rather have more hard news and less sports "news".

In this case about fashion, I find it particularly annoying to attack people for the clothes they are wearing.

31. And LIKE art, one man's treasure is another man's trash -
there is no objective "good" vs. "bad" in either "art" or "fashion" for my money.

It's all a subjective matter of opinion and so what's the point in slamming someone for their outfit when it's by far the most trivial aspect of the whole inauguration?

If the fashionatti wants to go after one another at some New York or Milan fashion show, fine but it has NO relevance to films being judged or politicans being elected. It's trivial and distracting.

34. I agree that the discussion of the fashion is fluff. I love Michelle Obama's dress by the way.
It is something that excites me a little. So I fluff up the conversation - so what? It doesn't all have to be hard news today. Surely if some women are hooked on the greatness of the day by the dress Obama wears than so much the better. At least fashion people can participate in the whole inargural thingy. And least they are hooked in somehow to the importance of the day.

THAT's where I get annoyed. It is such a superficial aspect of EITHER the inauguration OR the Oscars.

Let people be happy and leave'm alone if you can't say something nice about what they are wearing.

43. I sometimes can be critical. I come by it honestly by my parents who both were.
It is unproductive and I try not to be that way. I rarely am. But sometimes something critical slips through. I agree that the question should be "why not remain silent when you only have something critical to say?".
