1. Every time he's spoken, today...
...my eyes have welled up with tears of joy. Is this happening to anyone else?

3. I wept openly by the end of the speech. Mrs R had never seen that in 18 years, even
at funerals. I am half American Indian, but I carry NO bitterness toward any of my fellow Americans, no matter their ethnicity, no matter any history of any ethnic group. (I should mention that I am also married to a woman who is half-African, hence my incandescent anger toward even a HINT of racism.)

Resentment is pointless. I celebrate every one of the Americans I must except, of course, the racists). We each of us (like people all over the world) have our own stories, and if we just listen to those stories, our understanding deepens.

But I think the foundation of my love for my country (which springs, of course, from my respect for my countrymen and women), is the simple fact that, no matter our philosophical differences, Americans are still, and have always been, the most generous people on the face of the Earth.

A disaster happens anywhere in the world, even in Iran, and the first reflex of most Americans is to ask, "What can I do to help?"

What a great day to be an American.
