Ya know, even I'm annoyed at the idea that any church calls itself
"The National Cathedral". It seems arrogant, and does seem to violate the separation of church and state.

When I'm president, I'll have my prayer service at some humble neighborhood UCC. But, as my grandma used to say, "I wouldn't wait sitting on a hot stove". :)

9. Did they have trouble paying him? Cuz they once sent me a letter
soliciting funds. I wrote back, asking that they contribute to my little UCC. They never sent a dime. :(

2. Ahh, the neverending quest to find things to be annoyed at.
I bet it is endless. Yours is one that many probably have not considered, but will anxiously embrace now.

misperceived as it may be.

17. You should call the police, and have them arrest the person who's
holding a gun to your head and forcing you to click on threads you don't like.

That's probably a crime, too.

7. I've been annoyed at this for a long time. "The National Cathedral"
Edited on Wed Jan-21-09 10:45 AM by mycritters2
once actually sent me a fundraising letter. I sent it back with a letter of my own, asking that their members please contribute to the small, open country UCC that I was serving at the time...which had as much right as some wealthy Episcopal church to call itself "The National Cathedral". I haven't heard from 'em since. I guess they found some other source of money.

11. Well, now others who never thought of it can be annoyed too.
What if, instead, they called it "The American Cathedral"? You did find a good way to get off their mailing list. How did you ever get on it?

14. I have no idea how I got on their mailing list. I've never been to Washington,
I'm not Episcopalian (it is a denominational church, the main reason I think it shouldn't label itself the National Cathedral). I suspect they got hold of a list of clergy, maybe UCC, maybe some other list of clergy. Either way, I'm not going to send my money to a church that certainly does not need it, while I serve a church, and know of a good many others, that really are in need.

And no, American Cathedral isn't any better. We don't need a cathedral as a nation. It really is just a parish church...a large, wealthy parish church, no more important or worthy of attention than the poor, neighborhood congregations in the same city where it sits.

20. They probably picked up your name in some obscure way you would never guess.
Maybe we could have a federal board which would ok all names, like that country in Europe which approves the names of babies? Otherwise, naming is pretty open here. Why someone could even start a church and call it the "First Church of mycritters2".

The only division of the early church was geographical (The Church of Ephesus, The Church of Laodicea). Not a lot of trouble with names there.

23. It came to me personally..."The Rev. M Y Critters II". And then it asked me
for a contribution. Yeah, right. I'm gonna send a contribution to a wealthy church I may never see or set foot in. That really is jus a big parish church, no matter what it calls itself. I already have a church to support.

That's one of the reasons they have it where they have it. ;)

8. It's by invitation. I just wouldn't invite a whole slew of people :)
Bill Clinton held both of his at an African Methodist Episcopal church.

No matter what this church calls itself, we don't actually have a national cathedral.

5. It looks like the Obama's are dragging a little after their late night
I bet Obama just wants to be done with all the ceremonial stuff and get to work. Personally, I always hated church - even when I was a Christian. I'm watching the service right now and Michelle looks like she's barely hanging on.

.... who I believe is the minister of the congregation.

She has all of the rhetorical talent of Sarah Palin. Choppy, choppy. She's making my teeth rot with all of the sugar although I'm sure she's a wonderful woman.

But I agree with you on your main point .... their website claims that they are "The Spiritial Home of the Nation."

I do my congregation's website ... I think I'll put the same claim on there. lol

The spiritial home of the nation is the nation itself ..... and the rest of the world around it.

15. She isn't the minister of the congregation. She's President and General Minister
of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She used to serve congregations in Oklaoma, I think. Now she's at the Disciples national HQ in Indianapolis. The National Cathedral is an Episcopal church, so she's not even the same denomination.

19. Blame George Washington.
He's the one who hired Pierre L'Enfant to design the "Plan of the Federal City", the design that set aside land for a "great church for national purposes."

22. Why is it related to a denomination? I wouldn't even mind
a building belonging to the government that could be used by any faith for worship purposes. But why would a "National Cathedral" be a church of one denomination....and that, the denomination with the strongest ties to the Empire we fought to free ourselves from? It really is just a big Episcopal church. I have nothing against Episcopalians, but, otoh, I don't hold them in higher esteem than any other denomination.

26. I think Congress gave the franchise to the Episcopalians around the turn of the century.
...probably because most of them were Episcopalians at that time that it was chartered, but that's just my conjecture.

31. I know. I serve a "First". There are three other "Firsts" within two blocks
of my church. That is REALLY annoying!!!

I used to serve in a heavily German American area, where all the Lutheran and UCC churches were "St. John's". We used to joke that "St. John's" was German for "First".

It didn't look like there were any stores there, just a bunch of grass with people on it. And the parking sucked!
