everything Biden said, word for word when they were assuming their positions. THey didn't choose one or the other. Am I correct in thinking they don't understand that, or am I mistaken? Shouldn't they have just chose to say one or the other? Swear OR affirm? I don't like to say I swear, so I would say affirm.

demand to be senior staff, because I'm concerned they don't understand it was a choice to say either 'swear' or 'affirm' - and (shudders to even imagine) I certainly hope there weren't any that said 'state your name'. Sadly, I bet there were a few who did just as you suggested.

Some faiths don't allow swearing, and I believe it was because of the Quakers that this was added. Nixon, of course, swore...

I've been to a couple of group swearing in ceremonies where the assembled group parrots back whatever is said to them, even if it makes no sense -- like repeating "state your name". Heck, when I was sworn into the bar, the person administering the oath spoke with a very heavy accent -- so much so that it was difficult to understand what she said at times. So you had her saying "I solemnly swear that I will frungle and nurbish" and everyone repeating "I solemnly swear that I will frungle and nurbish"
