My Take On Yesterday ....
Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 01:28 AM by NanceGreggs
... for what it’s worth:

A sigh of relief
A smile you can’t quite seem to keep off your face
A deep breath … and then you exhale
A buzz in the air
A fever in the blood

A feeling of hope - cautious but contagious
A feeling of rebirth – complete with labor pains
Wary, but determined to offer a little trust
Weary, but determined to take on the task at-hand

A sense of changes coming
A sense of old values coming home

The coldness of the temperature, as people braced themselves
The warmth of the body heat, as people embraced each other

Waving flags
Waving people
Waving away the darkness
Absorbing the light – and reflecting it

The sound of voices raised, too enthusiastic to be silent
The silence of voices too choked by emotion to raise a sound

Remembrance of things past
Anticipation of things to come
Honoring the flickering glimmer of those gone
Igniting the glimmer of hope for those yet to be

A little trepidation
A lot of expectation
A little lost
A lot found
A little freer
A lot less bound

Words, lots of words …
Made in speeches
Whispered in prayer
Lifted in song
Spoken in poetry
Spoken in anger
Said with pride
Said with humility
Echoing, resonant
And finally shouted in resolve

The sweet aroma of hello
The bitter scent of goodbye
A passing from what was
Into what could be
Should be
Might be
WILL be

Some things to be forgotten
Some things to be remembered forever
Some things to be let go of
Some things to be held onto – for dear life

Patriotism that isn’t worn on a lapel, but in the heart
Love of country that isn’t emblazoned on a bumper-sticker, but on the soul

A day of history-in-the-making
A day of dreaming about the history about to be made

A million tears shed
A million phrases that all said
The same thing
“The time has come to be who we know we are.”

Yes, we can
Yes, we did
Yes, we WILL

6. That's exactly the new cabinet position needed right now.
I think you've just created your next job title.

11. Your muse is favoring you much of late!
Your "A Music of the Soul" was displayed at our inauguration party. Several people went back and reread it a few times, often with tears. It's now on the wall of our local Democratic party office, and I have a smaller one for my own office. I'm going to print this one out and display it next to "Music...", but at the bottom of it I'm penning in one word: Amen.

18. Brilliant and inspiring
This must go viral, and Nance must get that Cabinet position.
Then again, we in the new media are gaining on the traditional sources daily. They abdicated their responsibility to be a government watchdog under Bush's boot heel.
They have no one who can even carry Nance Greggs' keyboard.
It's a brand new day.

23. Smile people, but do not let the guard down!!
With assholes like this one John Corryn (did I spell that right?), trouble

http://journals.democraticunderground.com/McCamy%20Taylor/363

The GOP is a wounded animal, and wounded animals are dangerous!

I heard this sadly enough at a prayer meeting at my church last night, from a church elder who is a die hard Republican:

Don't worry, we'll get it back in 2010! God won't let HIS PARTY down!"

25. And sadly...
This elder dude already wrote to his Congressman demanding Obama be impeached for flubbing the Oath of Office!

I apologize if I am blowing wind out of sails, I too am happy Obama is in charge, and would like it to stay that way!

But people already want to remove him and the Democratic leads, and if douchebags like Corryn are delaying an AG appt. to show he still has weight, well best to have a cautious smile!

27. Quite the Poet, you!
Beautifully done, Nance. I always think your writing lyrical anyway.

This is a little crude to do so I beg forgiveness (of course in lieu of asking permission) but here's my own inaugural offering. I wrote it Inaugural morning and am amused that you, Elizabeth Alexander and I all couldn't resist trying to express that feeling of seeing one another and loving the sense of connection.

Inaugural Poem: Underground

It’s been so long I’d almost forgotten
that feeling you get when you
walk down the street,
nodding to one another like family—
When we all seem to be singing
the same song in our heads
in time to the beat of one great heart,
an American heart,
a heart lifted up out of despair
into the phenomenal possible
by the smallest of words:
Hope.
Not perfection,
not certainty,
not even probability.
Only Hope,
planted like a seed by Faith,
wintered over in Promise,
waiting for this moment
to spring up,
against all odds,
Stubborn, Alive
Joyous, Joyous!
Defying, at last denying
the dark and fear-frozen ground.
