McCarthy pledges to primary challenge Gillibrand in 2010 if she is chosen
ALBANY — Representative Carolyn McCarthy of Long Island, a staunch supporter of gun-control laws, said in an interview Thursday that she would challenge a fellow Democrat, Representative Kirsten E. Gillibrand, if Gov. David A. Paterson names Ms. Gillibrand to the Senate.

With Caroline Kennedy having withdrawn from consideration as a possible successor to Hillary Rodham Clinton, the governor is said to be leaning toward selecting Ms. Gillibrand, a congresswoman from the Albany area. But her support of the National Rifle Association and co-sponsorship of bills like H.R. 4900 have outraged Ms. McCarthy, who was elected to Congress after her husband was killed by a deranged gunman in a 1993 massacre on the Long Island Rail Road.

1. There are no worries here
Gillibrand is the "place holder" that Patterson vowed he would not select.

I think that virtually anyone, with any experience at all, who challenges her next year will have the advantage.

I am very disappointed in Patterson. Thank goodness he will need to be actually elected in the next Gov election. I predict strongly that he will not be.

3. Gillibrand will win easily in 2010. She's smart, attractive, and raises big money.

5. She represents a very proportionately small
segment of NYS.

Enough said.

7. Yes, what we need is more
representation for the upper east side of Manhattan. Those poor citizens have no voice in Washington.

6. Gillibrand stuck with issues for her area. Seems to me Paterson did not want Kennedy.
In a passive sorta way, he let her hang out there, media chomping, with her bad support not even providing a few sentences of why she's running.

With Paterson owing any Cuomo (his dad SoS to Mario), NY being a Dem machine and media snake pit, all Dem slate wanting the job, Caroline more royalty than Paterson abides, I'm not sure Paterson felt Kennedy would benefit him.

Feel badly for Caroline, who still needs to clarify, so she can be appointed somewhere in the world to help.
