why are so many longtime DUers changing their names? You've earned a reputaion here (some of you even a good one) and people look forward to your posts. Why change if you've been here since 2001? I don't get it.

17. On another site I frequented, the mods kept a name change thread going for such changes.
More for themselves than the other members, though it was still publicly viewable by all.

3. I kind of agree. Even the "antibush" type of names have a nostalgic
feel. But some folks want to rid themselves of all references to the mini bush weed previously known as the shrub.

6. I think it is kinda silly, unless your name is specifically about the past election

Own your identity.

This is kinda like being "born again".... which is a term I always loathed.

If you did it right the first time, you don't need to be "born again".

7. Because it's time for Change..............
With Obama in office it's time for change.

also some people had user names like "Kerry04" or something old and outdated like that so it was time to change it.

The red sig line is just not all that helpful . . .

13. I think I have a suggestion for the solution.
Maybe they could program DU so that the ones who want to change their names see the changed name on all their posts and the rest of us see their old names. Problem solved.

15. they could just put the info in user profiles
reflecting a list of old and new names. Really, I don't think name changes should be because someone has a rotten reputation and wants to hide that history. I can't think of any acceptable reasons why old usernames shouldn't fully disclosed and easily referenced. If you care about hiding, start a new account.

14. I don't know who is who any more.
There is one person I won't name who so far has not changed their name, thankfully. For that much, I am happy. As for the rest, I'm still trying to get used to it. It's almost as if everyone is wearing bags over their figurative heads now, I have to guess from other cues as to who they are.

16. Well, there is that red sig line at the bottom of their post
that tells you who they used to be, but that will probably be discontinued soon. I understand the dated sounding names, especially relating to *, but most of the ones I've noticed aren't like that.

18. "Ribofunk" Was a Riff off "Cyberpunk"
Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 09:56 PM by On the Road
which tells you it's about 20 years old. Used it for years, but it was getting old when I signed up for DU. Never expected to have 16,000 posts. I'm also 20 years older than when I latched onto it, and it just doesn't seem age appropriate any more.

Of course, the new handle is a Kerouac reference, but it's not as much in your face.
