"X number of Guantanamo detainees returned to terrorism after being released" |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 11:38 PM by nodramamama
That is an argument I have a big problem with.
How do we know these prisoners committed acts of terrorism before being detained, and why should we rule out the possibility that they became monsters due to their detention without trial and their being separated from their families for years in a foreign land?
Don't let wingnuts use that argument in a discussion about Gitmo.

1. We always said it was a training ground for terrorists! |
|
I wouldn't doubt 100% acted out terroristic acts after release. But we KNOW that isn't the case. It's a miracle that some of them DID NOT.

2. Could it be they actually knew the ones they |
|
released did have terrorist connections and they were purposely released as bait to lure in bigger fish?

18. No. The overwhelming majority of the souls Donald Rumsfeld bought |
|
from bounty hunters had never pointed a weapon at an American. Something like over 80%. They were bakers and goat herders and kids and grandpas and journalists and tourists that we paid for.

6. How can you put them on trial if they were never charged with |
|
any crime? Even if they do how can they be convicted since every Constitutional Right we have was broken and they were even tortured?

11. I think they will get a special exception from a court |
|
part of it being-look we can't risk releasing this guy
and part of it will be- (points to Bush) Look we didn't screw this up can we have a few do overs?

15. We'd have to either charge or release them. |
|
As for Bush's torture policy, we can't undo the past, unfortunately. And, we can't let those who are actually dangerous out willy nilly. We need to establish a system of actual justice going forward.

4. They have no credibility. None whatsoever. |
|
They've spent it all, so many lies, nothing can be taken to be reliable information.

10. Olbermann quoted a Seton Hall prof who reviewed this and found that the numbers changed |
|
When W&C. did try to quantify it the number returning to terror went from 12 to 7 to 5 to "some" to "a few" back up to 25 (must have needed a news cycle killed) etc.
There appears to be no proof of any of this and the changing numbers smell of BS.
Think about it this way- a guy who disappeared 5 years ago shows back up and you put him RIGHT BACK in the leadership role (if he ever was in one) and just trust that he hasn't turned or being traced??? Really? no of course not.

The question is. If they were terrorist and Bush let them go. Why did he do that? I mean we do have this whole court system here in the US.

8. I don't trust any information from the previous administration... |
|
and, if they weren't terrorist going in they probably are coming out. I wouldn't think too highly of a country that locked my ass up for no reason. The whole thing stinks.

12. How high would your opinion of that country be... |
|
...if they tortured you and your friends while they were at it?
How about if they defaced your sacred religious book in front of you?
I wouldn't be surprised at all if 2% of them went in as terrorists, and 100% of them came out as terrorists.
That's why the whole concept of Gitmo was ridiculous from the Gitgo.

19. "X number" of all prisoners commit crimes after release from jail |
|
That is not used as a compelling argument to give mandatory life improsment to all prisoners, including those who never even received a trial. Either we have a criminal justice system or we have a fascist state, and you can't have criminal justice without the justice part.

20. My friend (Faux Newz repub) mentioned this vomit on our way to art class |
|
don't get me wrong, I knew she would and had a couples lines prepped for the occasion.
First thing out of her mouth after our usual greetings and pleasantries was: So, what do you think about O closing Gitmo (aka ZOMG the terrorists are loose1!!1!) meme and I told her what I thought and what PO has stated he would do and how he'd do it (being a member of DU has helped me immensely).
Did she not spew every Limpball, O'Reilly, Hannity and right-wing Gitmo talking point she'd heard since last week. Nearly line by line and I could tell she believed every damn word of it.
After another 3-4 minutes of "discussion" we agreed to disagree.
My dream is to have every one of those lying sacks of feces disappear from public airwaves and off of every television network.
Obama better hurry up with that diverse media and other campaign promises he made during the primaries and GE 'cause we're going to need it!
